Hi folks,
I'm interested in purchasing a pronto but am a little confused by the different models, 1mb or 2mb memory, silver + gold cases. The majority of stores i've been to haven't got a clue about the differences if any.
Could somone tell me which one i should be opting for, how much i should really pay for it and good places to buy from?
Or should i wait and buy the new colour screen one?
If i buy one from the USA will it work in the uk? (obviously have to use a power converter for the battery charger).
and how come the us got the colour screen one, when I have a philips head office 10 miles up the road from my house who refuse to admit the colour screen exists!! (obviously sitting on large stocks of older versions i assume).
Thanks for you help folks.

Well, I'm not sure what prices are in the UK, but I'll try to help.
There are three different versions of the Pronto (5 if you count the Marantz and Yamaha).
TS-1000: The 1 MB version of the Pronto, also the oldest model. It is a blue colored Pronto. Not sure of US retail price.
TSU2000: The 2 MB version of the Pronto. It is silver in color. The 2000 also contains an IR code database which contains codes for almost all major brands of equipment. This makes programming most stuff a breeze. Retails for about 400 US dollars
TSU6000: This is the color screen Pronto. It is black and silver in color. It also has 8 MB of memory. Like the 2000, it has an IR database built in. It also ships with the docking cradle (recharging station). The "ProntoPro" also has an optional IR to RF converter ($150). The TSU6000 retails for $1000.
There is also a docking station available for the 1000 and 2000 models for an additional $80. Some people do claim to have problems with them. I have one and though I never get a true reading on how much battery life is left, It will last for at least six weeks before I have to recharge it, and I use the backlight function a lot.
I'm not real sure about the Marantz and Yamaha models, but here they are anyway.
Marantz: Gold in color. Basically the TSU2000 but it includes the docking station. Retails for $500.
Yamaha: Well, you've got me on this one. It came out after I had bought the 2000, so I didn't bother checking it out.
I'm sure that I missed some stuff here, but it is a fairly general description of the remotes. You should read the reviews of them on this site.
Personally, I think that the TSU2000 is more than adequate for most peoples needs, plus it is only $400. I own one and I have a list of every DVD I own built in it. All I have to do is press the title and It turns everything on and plays the movie. I also have all the codes for my TV, VCR, DVD, Receiver, Stereo, Cable, etc programmed in and I have only used about 23% of the available space.
Hope that helps. Anime Guru Also, keep in mind that these are retail prices, you can always find a better deal if you know where to look.

I bought a Pronto RU940 (the 2mb version) from Richer Sounds yesterday for £149.95. This doesnt include the charger, but they sell that for about £50. THe price listed in their catalogue is £199.95, but if you tell them you saw their advert in What Video and TV with the price listed at £149.95, then that is all you will pay.

SteveP... If I converted correctly (GBP 199.95 with dock = US$294.13) that is a very good buy. Do you have to pay VAT on top of that or is it the delivered price??? I am asking because I have someone from UK looking to just get a dock and the GBP 50.00 is really better than I can do for them considering delivery cost and possible duty. So, I would send them your info straight off as I would not be the best choice for the person. -Bruce alpha2data on eBay

Bruce, that includes vat. All high street prices in the UK (and Europe too I think) have to include vat.

Was there realy an ad in What Video and TV with the price listed as 149.95 ? When I called RS they said they are out of stock on the 2MB 149.95 version so I bought it from one of their shop fo 199.95 cause they said they don't match the price on their own website so I wonder if there really was a printed ad.

I bought a Philips Pronto 2MB RU940 from Richer Sounds in Reading last week and quoted the advert in Home Theatre or something similar. They had a couple more in stock. Got it for £149.99 as advertised. They had no chargers in stock but you can get that from www.techtronics.com for £45 inc. VAT and shipping. I've used them a number of times for multiregion DVD player etc. Do not buy the Pronto from them as it is £199. regards all Mike

The RU890 is a 1meg Pronto, and it gives a max CCF file of 380kb The RU940 is a 2meg Pronto, and it gives you a max CCF file of 1404kb The RU970 is the equivalent to the TSU6000, a color remote, I am not sure if it is available yet.
Then you have Marantz (they are gold color) the RC5000=RU890, the RC5000i=RU940
between the Marantz and Philips there are some different features.
Some of our Plants in the UK have bought Prontos from Letsautomate (we use them to control our videoconferencing equipment) they had good experience with them.

I went to WH Smith and got the What Video & DVD with the RS advert.
So I called Richer Sounds today and complained that on the advert it is priced at 149.99 but I paind 199.99.
They told me to come over and get a refund.
I'll probebly get a docking station instead.
At least they are willing to refund me the money.

Zoti,
The 2MB 940 model should only cost you 149pounds from Richer Sounds. The magazine advert you want to quote is 'What Hi-Fi'. The printed adverts in What Hi-Fi frequently beat the regular in-store prices on many items by 50 pounds or more. E.g. Sony STRDB940 A/V receiver 299, Marantz 6000 OSE CD player 249, Pioneer 535 DVD (Multi region) 179 and so on....
It's always worth picking up a copy of 'What Hi-Fi' before shopping at Richer Sounds.
