if anybody could help me get started with the ir tool i would really appereciate it. i have a bit of experience with programing in general, so i can transfer the codes and stuff. i just need a few clues as to what to change when in the ir tool. i tried the command value like the note said but it just isn't changeing much. thanks for everything you have supplied all of us with on this site. i don't know how you figure all this out, but you are extremly helpful. thanks again!

I just starting to use this also. Mine is not the voice of experience, but I'll share what I've done.
First, I read the README file that comes with the IRTOOL.
Second: I "learned" a number of buttons for the device I want to play with (My pioneer elite TV). One by one I copied the respective IR codes into the IRtool and Decoded them.
I wanted to identify patterns, so I copied each of the decoded IRcode components that the IRTOOL displays into a spreadsheet. This allows me to make educated guesses about what changes to try. This seems reasonable, although I haven't created any codes yet that do anything.
Anyway, that's my approach. I hope others share theirs.
