I've just purchased a Pronto and with all these files and techie jargon, I have no clue where to begin. After defining the brands, where should I proceed next? Is there some sort of Pronto for Dummies guide or something like that? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Best,
Jeff

Read the FAQ's. Only takes a little time.

Everything you need is in there.

Honest.

Then play with it, download some CCF's

You will have a ball with the Pronto.

If you get stuck, post here. you will get help.

Jeff,

I asked the same question about "Pronto for Dummies" - sorry there isn't one. I am brand new but will try to fill you in a little. First you need to go to the file archive and download a ccf that has some of your equipment in it. Also need to install Pronto Edit on your computer. Copy the ccf to PE. Then download the ccf to the Pronto (top tool bar - Pronto with arrow pointing to it) Then you can play a bit. Actually, you may want to delete most of the things in the ccf that don't apply to you. OR you can modify them later. Open a new configuration and set up panels(toolbar-add panel) then try adding buttons to the panel. Then go to file archive and download network icons. Then try and put the icon on the button. Then right click the button and go to "properties" >action tab, delete anything in the right column and you can then enter what you want the button to do. i.e., NBC button on satellite, should go to 943 for example. Go to set IR, scroll down and click on 9, then go back and click on 4 and then again on 3. Download this to the Pronto and then turn on the DSS, and then click on the NBC logo and see what happens. Of course, once you download this, you lose whatever you did with "Brands". I think you could upload the "Brands" and then merge the ccf with it, but I don't know enough to be advising - just trying to give you a little insight or perhaps a starting point which, IMHO, isn't there!! When you cannot find what you want in the FAQ (which has many answers but not all) you can search the forum. I find it a very steep learning curve (and my VCR is NOT blinking 12:00)- maybe after we both master it we can write the book :)

Larry,

Thank you very much for the information. I imagine it could get kind of fun once you figure out what all the stuff means and how this thing actually works. I'll try what you suggest and see how that works out.

Thanks again.

Best,
Jeff

From your post, it sounds like you may not be aware of the many self-help resources here on this site. So my suggestion is to read the FAQs (several times - all the way through), download the manuals from this site (FAQs too) in .PDF format so they are always accessible to you (you will need Adobe AcroBat to view these offline).

Read Daniel's Review , it is very thorough and helpful.

Use the 'Search This Forum' link for anything you can't find in all of the above.

Ask *Specific* questions here, with as much detail as possible. ie: which remote you have, clear details of what is happening, not happening or what you want to try. What kind of PC you have with OS and peripherals if they pertain to your question. We do like to help, but the more information you can provide us, the easier it is to get you the correct information or to point you in the right direction.

But best advice of all (after reading, a lot) is to simply download CCFs and experiment with them in ProntoEdit Emulator, then dissect them in ProntoEdit. Especially since the TSU2000 Firmware Update is available, there isn't much that you can't recover from.

You've started correctly--using the UDB first.

Now read my post in this thread:

Thank you Mike. I've gotten enough responses to get me going. It sounds as though this is a pretty supportive "help group." Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Best,
Jeff

I've already talked to the "Dummies" people about writing a "______ for Dummies" book. You need to get yourself an agent first, and then submit a fairly complete outline..... almost a draft, of the book.

In other words, you have to be very, very committed before they will even give you a "look see".
