Pronto rebooting all the time - nothing seems to help

Hi folks,
I have some trouble with my Philips Pronto TS1000, 1MB, RU890/00S, Sys 3,62, App 4,85. Free memory 67%. Maintained w/ ProntoEdit 1.05.

The problem is that the device reboots for no obvious reason at all when I touch the display, almost like a home computer that crashes its Windows-OS and automatically reboots. This used to be just freak incidents until a couple of days ago, when it started to happen on a daily basis and it's been getting worse ever since. Today I had to re-boot the thing about 20 (!) times before it would do any work and after a few minutes pause, the darn trouble started all over again.

I tried everything the FAQ suggests - multiple firmware flashes, uploading default ccf's (yes - it crashes with the default as well) and so forth. It doesn't just happen with one button, it happens randomly with any screen, any device and any button (sometimes, but rarely, even with the hard buttons).

The device is my second Pronto, since my first one was replaced under warranty because of a dead display. I remember in the time before the first one gave up, the same strange reboots happened with increasing frequency, just like it is the case now with the replacement.

This is why I'm extremely worried right now, I fear this new one might die as well (and now I'm out of warranty).

Please, someone give me a hint on what might be wrong and how I could fix it.

Thanx a bunch!

Had the same sort of problem with my new prontopro. Got this right out of the FAQ. Try this.....

A4-10 My remote is dead! What can I try to fix it?
If your remote refuses to start or is displaying a black screen, take the batteries out and leave them out overnight. Then, in the morning, put them back. The remote should reboot as normal. If it does not it may need to go back to Philips for repair.
If your remote is constantly rebooting, as in after you "CANCELLED" a CCF download in ProntoEdit, you can fix it via this method:

Connect your remote to your PC.
Open a terminal program (such as HyperTerminal, which is included with Windows).
Connect to the serial (COM) port your remote is hooked up to at 115200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no flow control.
Hit the reset button on the back of your remote control. On the terminal program you should start to see numbers such as "00 02 04", etc.
Hit the [ESC] key on your keyboard. A prompt, CABERNET> should appear.
Type dl ccf followed by return. You should see a slowly growing string of C's.
Download your CCF file to the remote using the XModem protocol (Transfer -> Send File).
When the download has finished, type go followed by return.

Good luck! Joe.

Joe, Stefan has been able to redownload the firmware and CCFs, so doing a manual download won't help.

You can get this behaviour if the battery is low.

If you are using the charger, it may not be charging properly. Take the battery pack out and put it back in.

Otherwise, the only thing not done so far, that I can see, is leaving the battery out overnight.

I have also had this problem and I can't tell you if this logically relates to the apparent solution. I had screens with a lot of black in them and I noticed they took a longer time to be drawn. Also the Pronto would reset quite frequently. I changed the screens to be more white and grey and all the problems went away

Hey, thanks a lot to you guys for your answers - they were all really helpful. The tips regarding the batteries did the trick! Although the bats were only about 3/4 worn, replacing them with fresh ones solved my problem. I would never have thought to replace them BEFORE the battery warning icon comes on, but I did after reading your answers and it helped! Yipeee!
This forum is really great - thanks so much to Remotecentral for initiating it!!!

Pleased to be of assistance. Nothing worse than thinking your Pronto has gone to heaven!

Note that when the remote resets (as it does after every file download) it takes a while before the battery meter can give an accurate reading. Also, the remote hates alkaline levels below 50%.

I too have a similar problem. When I use Hyperterm to see what is going on, I get:

WDT reset!

I have tried the multiple firmware flashes, and downloading my ccf via Xmodem and hyperterm. I still get the same problem. The _ERROR seems to happen randomly. The only thing I have not tried yet is removing the battery for 8 hours. I will try that next.

I removed the rechargable battery for >8 hours, and put it back in this morning. I still get the error. Has anyone seen anything similar to this? I don't know what has cause the problem. I had not reflashed it, or changed any settings when it started happening.

Have you tried a different ccf? I had one the other day that would crash every time. I went back to one version before (I'm anal and do incremental backups of my ccfs) and then I was fine. I read through the previous posts an it sounded to me that you were using the same ccf.

OzDave - are you using 1000, 2000, or 6000?

I am using a 1000.
I am also using the same CCF. But I also tested the unit after reflashing it with the latest firmware. The ccf installed at that point I presume comes with the firmware. Using that CCF, I got the same result, the _ERROR.
I was playing with it again this morning and it was even booting half the time. The "Pronto" logo would be overlayed ontop of my home page. Then it would beep and reboot. After about three reboots, it would come up OK.
I am starting to wonder if it is the rechargable batteries I am using. I have the Recharge Package (DS1000). I usually let the unit run until it indicates that the batteries are low before recharging it. When I put it on the docking station now, the green light comes on then turns off indicating that it is charged. The Pronto also believes that the battery is at 100%
