Wanted to know if anyone is programming their pront to be device oriented. I don't have this yet (its on the X-mas list) but I was thinking about setting this up to be device oriented. I figured a main screen could have buttons like watch dss and when you go to that screen you would have buttons that effect that task (numbers, menu, surround, and so on). Is this possible without the software and what are your thoughts.
Many of the ideas on this forum are great but at times are confusing because I don't yet have this in my hands. When I do get this will much of this be more understandible?

I'm not sure exactly of your definination of "Device" vs. "Task", but for me "Device" would be per physical device: TV, VCR1, VCR2, Receiver, DSS, etc. All buttons from the original remotes would be reproduced under each device. This is the default way the Pronto operates.

For "Task" you'd have various tasks, like "Watch a DVD Movie", and under that task you'd have all buttons that relate to it: DVD transport controls, receiver sound setup, television picture control, etc. This is the way the IRIQ/Take Control operate by default. The Pronto should be configurable as such via the software. Personally I prefer my remote to be mainly "by device" with task-oriented macros.

Eric,

The Pronto is very flexible even without the software and can accomplish what you want without the software. The home screen has buttons for each of the devices. I have my sytem set up such that when I tap the DVD device button, the following happens automatically:

1. The receiver input is changed to the DVD input
2. The TV input is changed to the DVD input
3. The screen changes to the DVD screen which has the primary buttons to control the DVD player.

Other actions could also be included in the above list such as turn the DVD player on, turn the TV on, activate a screen (if not using a TV), etc. The possibilities are almost endless. I did not change the label of the DVD device button, but you could if you wanted to. The ability to have a device key actually run a macro is an undocumented feature that Daniel discusses in his review of the Pronto.

When the software becomes available, there will be an almost unlimited ability to program the Pronto.

If you have any problems when Santa brings you the Pronto, just ask and we will all be glad to offer assistance.

Daniel...you understanding of device is exactly what I meant. I thought that if I set some tasks up it would be easier for the wife or anyone else over the house trying to use remote. What type of macros do you mean under the devices. I was thinking macros along the lines of on and off but until I get my hands on this I guess I don't fully understand its capabilities.

Daniel,
As per prvious postings, as a beta tester for Pronto PC software, I can advise that any button that you program can have a one or a string of commands embedded as well as a "jump to" statement at the end of the string. This provides for easy use by anyone.
In fact, you may ultimately even have some separate menues that are more limited in scope for "special" users.

HA!

Jack, I got a kick out of your tone when (in another thread) you described designing "help" screens for significant others. But the term "special users" takes the cake.

I know this could also mean inlaws, babysitters, children, etc., but I think we all know what you really meant. That's hilarious. Just don't tell my "special user" about this, or I'm finished!

How many of you are starting to get annoyed hearing about all the fun Jack is having with the software -- raise your hand :-)

It's been a long time since I was on the edge of my seat for a software product ;-)

I've noticed a few posts referring to "device" vs. "task-oriented" capabilities of the pronto as opposed to the IRIQ. The pronto doesn't care which action you teach it to execute regardless of the device template. On all my templates, for example, the hard volume buttons control the pre-amp volume except for the "basic TV" template (for my wife, a "special user") which controls the TV's internal speakers. On my "enhanced TV" template, sound is routed through the pre-amp and volume is controlled again with the hard buttons.(This is explained on page 31 of the user guide.)

There should be no confusion that the IRIQ is somehow superior because of its so-called "task-oriented" execution.

I can't wait to get my mitts on the software, either.

Come now, we all know that there will be a list of feature requests as long as my arm within a week of you guys getting your mitts on the software :-)

But seriously, it's worth the wait. You'll be glad of some of the nice touches that were added in the last weeks of development.

CLearly, you're on the develpment team, and I (for one) think it's amazingly generous of you to "hang out" here and help out. This is my first visit, and I'm amazed at the quality and generosity of the postings here. My only other experience has been on software newsgroups, and the tone is, well, generally "different". This is a pleasure, and I just wanted to say "thanks". THis goes out to all who have posted helpful information here, as well.

I wouldn't dream of taking credit for the great job they did - though I work in the same engineering group at Philips, I wasn't on the Pronto development team.

What I can take credit for is proposing the product concept and getting the ball rolling. The development team took that germ of an idea and built a great product. I had a little influence during the development, but they deserve the kudos for the end result.

I do feel a certain fatherly pride, though :-)
