I've been snooping around this site for a while now and some of you might recognise me, I've posted a few times, here's my thought.... With all the people getting frustrated with PE I was wondering if anybody out there would be able to re-write - redesign the software. I realize that this is a major task but I know that there are some very talented programmers out there. I know that cost would be a factor but I would be willing to buy a copy and I'm sure that many others out there would as well. Just a thought!!!

The idea has come up before and I think someone is currently working on a Java ProntoEdit which will hopefully be better than the real thing and also be nice for people who don't want to use Windows as their OS. I think there's a thread or two about it in these forums.

Estimates for rewriting ProntoEdit are in the 1 to 2 person-year range.
I haven't heard from the Java guy for a while. I suspect he may have shelved it for the moment as it has turned out to be a very major effort.
However, he was also working on a program that would just do the comms to/from the Pronto. That was looking most promising.

Just made contact with the guy. He hasn't got that far to go. He's been working on it for over 2 months now.
He has been having some trouble with the comms. The Pronto is touchy with different serial ports, and is extremely sensitive to either minute timings or other implementation differences. This provides a bit of an insight into why some machcines have comms problems and others do not.

If it is Java it should be platform independent

It does run on Windows. You have to download the Sun Java virtual machine though.
