Thanks for all the great info guys. I checked out the above mentioned Niles power blocks on their home page. These are quality products.
I ordered the current sensing power strip from Cyberguys.com (Model #1120125). The total came to $32.82 ($23.99 + $8.83 S&H).
This is indeed the cheapest solution. The SmartHome catalog came in the mail today. I will try out their #4040 IR X10 Command Console ($29.95) and a couple of standard X10 Appliance Modules (#2002) at $12.99 each. They are rated for 15A and should be able to handle the power amps.
The SmartHome Catalog opened my eyes to a whole new world of home automation. I am amazed to find the sophisticated PC programs that can be used to control and customize anything you want!

As a follow up, Cyberguys shipped me the current sensing power strip today. I hooked up the pre-amp to the main outlet and the power amp to one of the switched outlets and my problem was solved in an instant.
Thanks to Mike Bond for offering this simple and economical solution.
The 115 page catalog from Cyberguys is choke full of interesting stuff. I especially like their USB docking station for laptops. The most functional port replicator with 10/100 LAN connection at $149, that I have ever seen.
