IS-TEMPLATE DANGER!!! and how to HIDE devices?

I have a DEVICE in my ccf which is used strictly for aliasing-to (it is called IRCODES and has various panels for each piece of equipment) and I want to make IRCODES disappear from the DEVICES LIST in the PRONTO. I have "HIDDEN" all of the panels in the IRCODES device (they all have parentheses around them), yet the device continues to appear on the DEVICE list on the PRONTO. And when that device is selected the first panel, hidden or not, always pops up.

As I have done in the past to learn so much I began using trial and error experimentation in Prontoedit to see if I could find a solution. So I right-clicked on the DEVICE and changed it to "IS TEMPLATE," which caused a DISASTER->>> Any button aliased to any button on any panel in that device lost the alias command (viewing the action list of those buttons showed no aliases anymore to that device: the actions just disappeared from the list). Fortunately, I found this before the next ccf SAVE!!

So here I wanted to...
1) warn other newbies about changing a device to "IS TEMPLATE" and,
2) to ask if someone can explain to me how I can make a device disappear from the DEVICE list on the PRONTO.

BTW, as an experiment, I changed the DEVICE to "IS TEMPLATE" and observed the disappearing aliases. Then, before saving, I removed IS TEMPLATE from the device and the missing aliases re-appeared in that session. BUT... In a new session, I changed the device to IS TEMPLATE and observed the disappearing aliased again, so I saved the ccf as a temporary file name. And when I re-opened that temporary file in another Prontoedit seesion, removing IS TEMPLATE from that device did NOT make any aliases re-appear! Hmmmm!?!?

Anyway, any help on how to hide a DEVICE would be appreciated. I did not see it in the FAQ.

Move your "IRCODES" panels into another device and then mark them as "IS HIDDEN", leave them down at the bottom of the device they are in and they should rarely (if ever) show up on your Pronto. Unless you go into LEARN mode, then all Panels are visible. In which case you should Write Protect at least that device, if not the whole CCF

Mike's answer is the best solution, but there are a few of others.

1) If you rename the device from "IRCODES" to "" and you put it as the last device it is harder to find, (obviously it is still there, and it can be accessed, but how often do you (or any one else) pick a non-choice?)

2) If you move them to the macro side, they will not appear on the device side :), but you will not be able to learn to it

3) create a do not enter page (so if someone picks "IRCODES" he still cannot do anything about it.

you can use any (or all of these ideas)

Thanks for the inputs! I had hoped there might be an "IS HIDDEN" flag for a device like there is for a panel.

Mike, if I do as you suggested and move these panels into another device (via a full panel copy and paste) that I would then have to re-alias everything to the new panels eventually? I have not found a way to copy a panel or button and have the aliases move with it. (Moving it up or down the "tree" using Ctrl/Cursor DOES keep the aliases straight, and even re-naming it keeps the aliases straight, but not a copy/paste. ...or did I miss something in my "trials and frequent errors"?)

THANKS AGAIN!

Doug: don't Copy a panel, just move it.
On the tree side of Prontoedit
1) click (and hold) the left button on the panel
2) move the panel to where you want
3) let go of left button

(this works for devices and Macro groups too)

Doug, don't copy and paste. Just click and drag the panels to the new device, performing a complete move, not a copy. All you aliases will follow without a hitch.

Anthony beat me to it. It took me ten minutes to compose the post above, and I still misspelled the word "your." :-)

Hey, that's a great "tip" !!!!! I learn something new every day here! Thanks very much MrKlaatu, bdub, and Anthony!!!!

Daniel, if you're monitoring....This HOW DO I MOVE A PANEL AND KEEP THE ALIASES TO IT STRAIGHT? tip would be a great addition to the FAQ (or did I miss it somewhere). It might need PART1 (moving it within the same device) and PART2 (moving to another device, for clarity.

Also, a WARNINGS section in the FAQ would be useful, too. It could include things such as the danger of switching on IS TEMPLATE on a mature ccf, or the dangers of using the DELETE KEY based on what "may be" highlighted in Prontoedit.

Thanks again to all!

How about marking each of your IR code panels as hidden, and then moving them in to the HOME area. That way, no one could ever "stumble" across them. They will just serve as a place to keep IR codes that are aliased to.
