This is my first post, and I want to let everyone here know that I love my new Pronto, and that all the tips and advice here have been great!

one problem I am having with my unit is that I just received the "Out of Memory" message, but that I am NOT automatically getting the free up memory yes/no option. Any thoughts? Or do I have a bad unit?

Hi,
I don't know what would cause this, but did you try "rebooting" using the reset button (you will not loose any programmed keys).

Matt,
Did you "learn" all or many of your function key IR codes into the remote?
If so, I would suspect that they were "unclean" in that they included stray "garbage" IR as well as the actual codes, which will consume far more memory than needed.
Learning remotes must be "taught" IR codes in a "clean" environment.
Some "garbage" causes found to date are:

Flourescent lighting
Halogen lighting
Outdoor light
Other IR devices operating within range

So, the moral is to teach the codes in a dimmly lit room with window blinds/shades/drapes closed and no flourescent or halogen lighting.
We once had a problem downtown chicago on teh 15th floor of a building where a TV remote simply wouldn't work at anything more than about a 6ft range.
After replacing the TV and remote with the same results, we closed the blinds.....problem solved.
Turns out there was massive garbage IR streaming in through the windows causing interference.
This same type of interference can of course also be "learned" into a remote because the Pronto only compares learned codes to RC type Philips codes and if not found, just learns the data it's provided, with no error detection/correction possible. This is of course true of ALL LEARNING remotes as there really is no way of doing error detection/correction as they don't actually know what the codes should "look" like.
I hope this helps.

Matt,

As I recall, with mine the 'Out of Memory'
message came up on it's own first. I was still able to use the unit for normal function, ie.
operating keypads & macros etc. Until I tried
to resume some sort of memory intensive action
such as deleting/modifying macros/keys/labels,
it would not let me and came up with the
'clear memory' yes or no. I think the very fact
that it gives you a choice implies the Pronto
can operate in this state, but as soon as you try and change it's setup in some way, it must first free up memory. Just try and delete a key and
it should come up with said prompt.

One thing to check is when you program you are HOLDING the original remote's button down until the Pronto finishes. It will sense a repeating signal and only store it once, with the repeat command.

If you're just PRESSING it you may send the signal two and a half times, and the Pronto will store it two and a half times - taking up more room. From what I've seen there is no way you should run out of memory at such an early stage.

Hi all -

I got my problem figured out - it was a corrupt config file - had to totally reprogram the unit...

So if any of you get the out of memory message w/o the option to clean, DO NOT reset until you are ready to reprogram!

This happened to me also. Forced me to lose my whole config.

Remotes don't abort sending the IR code if they're half-way through when the user releases the key. I.e. you won't see the 'two and a half' code scenerio described; the remote would complete sending the third one before stopping. Pronto would then find that all three are identical, and store only one copy.

I recently purchased a Pronto and have inputted the remote commands for a Sony projection tv and toshiba dvd player. Prior to learning these commands the available memory was 44%. It is now showing 38% available and I still have 4 more components to input. Does anyone know why the memory is being used up? At the current rate I won't have much available space for future devices.
Thanks for your input and suggestions.

Bob,
I wouldn't worry much about memory used. I would however consider deleting unused devices to free up additional memory.
Other postings here indicate that one would be hard pressed to use up all the memory available on active devices. Further, I would alos make sure that when learning codes, that they be learned in a "clean" environment so IR trash is not learned as well.
