When I use ActiveSync 3.1 with my HP Jornada 548 by default it does tie up Com1 even if you are using the USB cradle. You can disable its use of COM ports by changing the "Connection Settings" dialog. Have you done this?

Are you sure that you're com ports are setup correctly in the system bios? Do you have an IR port active? Are you using non standard interrupt settings? What port is the modem using?

Mike,
I know this sounds silly but I had a similar problem when I first got my pronto and after much messing around I found that by switching to the second serial port on my PC I got the up/download to work 95% of the time. I still get the odd "no response from pronto" but not enough to annoy me. I'm certainly not a computer wiz as my wife will tell you, I managed to screw up just about all my settings to get pronto to work, however I am sensible an wrote down the original settings and got everything working again, then I switched the serial port and hey presto it worked.
BTW I have an old IBM Aptiva with a Cyrix 6x86 PR166+ and 128 MB EDO ram, win95 and as I said before don't have any real problems. Hope you have luck getting ProntoEdit to work without upgrading your PC.

Long shot idea, but try it. Make sure your Pronto is always ON before you try to upload or download. I sometimes get an error message if my pronto isn't on. Never get one when it's on first

I had the same problem for a long time. I ended up switching my mouse that was using COM1 to using the PS2 connection and then using COM1 for my Pronto. Good luck.

If you have eliminated the application issues, then it's time to get down to the BIOS. Review your system information to check for IRQ conflicts. If you find none, then check for anything that might be sharing the com port. Do as others have suggested, plug the pronto into a different com port. If you need to open up the second com port in your BIOS, you may want to uninstall & reinstall the editor. When you try to connect and fail, does the detail information show that it is looking on both com ports or only 1?

I run a dual boot system (WIN98 & win2k) using com2 since my track ball uses com1 and have NO problems connecting to the remote from the editor (assuming I remember to plug the dumb thing in). Now talking to the remote from the editor trying to learn IR codes, well, thats another story..

Wish ya luck....

As Roy sez, It seems obvious to try another port before doing anything more drastic. I have an internal modem, that will NOT under any circumstances be recognised on Com1. But on Com2, no probs. The ways of the PC can be strange!!

sounds familiar...

Sounds like an IRQ conflict to me, I spent about three hours last night working it out.

here's what I had
COM1 IRQ4 - mouse
COM2 IRQ3 - internal modem
COM3 IRQ4 - Pronto

Problem was, since the mouse and the Pronto were trying to use the same interrupt, they kept colliding, only one would work at a time, usually the mouse.

Here's what I did to fix it:

- go to control panel, open the system icon
- under the ports section find "Communications Port 3"
- select it, click properties
- click the "resources" tab
- uncheck the "automatic settings" box
- change the Interrupt Request from 03 to 04
(it will warn you that you will be conflicting with your modem, which is using IRQ 04, say yes anyway)
- go back adn find your modem
- select, properties, resources
- make sure the "automatic settings" box is checked
- close everything down and reboot

If all goes well, it should re-assign the modem IRQ
to something else so nothing is conflicting.

After that I had:
COM1 IRQ4 mouse
COM2 IRQ11 internal modem
COM3 IRQ3 Pronto

Now everyone has their own interrupt, and everyone is happy. (Of course I haven't tried using the scanner or printer since I did this.)

You might also want to try your Pronto on another PC, just incase the Pronto communications is DOA. At least that would cut the problem in half - if it works fine on the other PC the Pronto is good.

DOOMED NO LONGER ! ! ! !

I bought a "Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter #USA-19W".

I did the standard installation from the included CD, which defaults to COM4.

Plugged my Pronto into the adapter & the adapter into my USB Hub.

AND KA-ZING! . . . I'm Up & Running !!!!!!!!

The adapter comes with a LOT of documentation & help on the CD, including help on how to reconfigure your device settings if the need should arise. I cannot attest to the accuracy of this help because I simply tried my connection right after installation . . .AND IT WORKED IMMEDIATELY. But given a cursory glance, it *looks* fairly thourough.

I would like to add that I can now sync my HP548 (via ActiveSync on COM1) **AT THE SAME TIME** as I am working with ProntoEdit on COM4 via USB. I'm not **Really** that busy a person, I just thought I'd try it and it worked!

All-in-All I am a **MUCH** happier camper than I was when I started this thread.

Now comes the "FUN" part . . . learning how to **USE** ProntoEdit!!

I am sure I will return with MANY, MANY questions in the near future.

Thanks for everyone's help to this point, and thanks in advance for that which is to surely soon to come!

Bye for now, I must go play ! ! ! ! !

Do you have any info on this adaptor?
a URL?

Does it upload to the pronto faster than the standard serial cable?

Thanks,
Bruce.

Here's KeySpan's info page:

Here's where I bought it @ PZ Zones:

But really, you should use your search engines and Price Search Pages to find things on your own. My best deal may not be your best deal!
