They are basicaly the same remote, for the few differences read the review. It depends on what features are more important to you. Do you prefer timers or multiple page jumps....

Also of consideration is price... sometimes the RC5000 can be had for less than the Pronto plus charger.

What is the relative importance of the pre-programmed codes in the Pronto? Do you still end up having to download .CCF files to get it set up?

Yes/No A CCF has all the information (what the buttons look like, where they are and what they do and the IR code). Even without a CCF you could always program any of these remotes (you just had to learn every command-by pointing your remote and teaching each button one at a time), the DB has the advantage that with the press of a few buttons (navigation/trial) you can program all the buttons for the remote.

Anthony,

What's the "DB" you refer to?

Thanks

I have to say that, I'm partial to the Pronto because it doesn't have the codes. I like the idea that maximum memory is available to me, because my pronto isn't storing codes that I'm not using. What would be really cool though is to have the codes ship on a cd with the remote, then they could be readily downloaded via prontoedit.

Tony, you have it the wrong way round. The Pronto 2000 has the codes. The RC5000i (and the international version of the Pronto - the 940) do not.

Also, when the V2 software is released for download, there is a chance that you will be able to use the 2000 without the database and free up the memory.

Hopefully we'll know next Wednesday when it is supposed to be released.

In my case I was referring to the RU890. Sorry for the confusion.

Can somebody clear something up for me - I read the lengthy reviews on the Pronto 2000 on this web-site - I opted for the 2mb version because of the inclusion of remote control database and the Pronto Edit v2 software - I've just received my Pronto RU940 - no software included and no mention in the manual of the database - did I buy the wrong version?

Nick: Yes. two divisions of Philips produce Prontos
-------- USA ------- Europe
1M ---- TS1000 ----- RU890
2M ---- TSU2000 ---- RU940

The 1M versions are (going to be) stop(ped)
The TSU2000 comes with the CD and DB, the RU940 does not
