I finally got the hang of pronto edit, but now i can't get the pronto to respond. I always get a message that the seral port is open but the pronto is not responding. Phillips sent me a new cable and still no luck. I know it's not the pronto because when i take it to my buddy's house we can get it to work. So what am i doing wrong? please help, i'm going crazy.......

thanks,
Mr.Bee

Do you have an input device such as a PDA or a Digital camera? Most of them require a serial port. The software icon is located in the task; the serial port is "locked" even if the device is not connected.
If so, just close those applications, and try again...

Make sure you have the pronto hooked up before you load the pronto edit software.

option 1) Kill your serial port from the control panel or system devices and re-install it as com1.
option 2) get a serial to serial cable and see if your pc can talk to friends, you'll need to install windows pc to pc coms options. This will determine if your serial port is dead.

option 2 isn't the only way of finding out if com port is OK - One of the earlier replies asked if you had connected a PDA or camera? Have you EVER had the port working with something else?have you ever used it at all?

Have a play and get back with your findings...

do you have an internal or external modem? Pronto edit will query all available com ports. If the only one avail is the one the modem is using, then you will get the message you described. If you try to upload to your pronto while you are on the internet and the message is com1 is in use or busy then the modem is on com1. I did not see the OS listed in your thread so I will guess you have Win 9x or ME. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double click the System icon. Click on Device Manager. Look in the Ports section. This will show you what com (and lpt) ports you have. Double click on each com port and look in the Device Status section to see if there is a message about it working properly. Also check your BIOS settings (Del or F10 or F2 etc at system boot-up). Make sure your com ports are enabled there. I would also suggest trying a diffent pc at work or a neighbor's. Most likely you will find that your computer is not setup properly. In the rare case that you cannot get the pronto upload/download on another pc either, get the pronto replaced. Be aware that it is very possible that the other pc may not be setup properly either.

Bryan's right,
Your modem should normally be set to com2 leaving com1 free for the serial port.
Post as much detail as you can about what your ports - control panel\com ports etc...
