I have a Nevo Q50 controlling the AppleTV for a long while.
It worked perfect. But now I updated the AppleTV software and I can not make the AppleTV go into standby anymore!!

The problem is that with the old software you could bring the AppleTV into standby by pressing the pause button for about 5 seconds. This can be emulated by the Q50 perfectly. So when I want all equipment to be shut down, I press my special "Power off all" button and eveything will be shut down (AppleTV goes standby).

With the new AppleTv software however, pressing the pause button for 5 seconds only works when you are in the home menu. And I can not make a Q50 sequence to go to the home menu automatically, because you need to know where you are in the menu. Pressing the 'menu' button will bring you each time one menu level higher, but when you are already at the home menu, it goes a menu down again!!

So how can I make the Q50 shut down (standby) the AppleTV, regardless of what I was doing with the AppleTV.

I really hope somebody has a clever work around for this problem.

Well let me first state I have never even seen an apple tv so my advice could be for naught.

If I am understanding your problem correctly you only have one menu command and that just moves the menu one selection up or down (pending on when it reaches the home menu)

It would seem by logic that you would have to count how many menu options there are say there are 6 menu features available. You would need to think that if you were in that 6th position then you would need 6 presses of the menu key to get to home.

So I would build a global macro that did a 5sec pause transmission followed by a menu command.
Then go to your "power off" macro and repeat this global macro for the worst case scenario (the number of menu choices there are)

This would send the pause command for each menu page and then send a menu command to move it to the next menu option.

This should work unless the apple tv wakes on pause or menu commands and if that is the case then I don't see a way around this.

The Apple TV is a B---CH to control and I'm close to giving up myself. The problem I've been running into is that when you don't put it in Standby the unit will freeze before you go to use it next so it has to be reset and restarted.

I've owned my AppleTV for a little over a year. I gave up trying to find a work-a-round to get it to go directly to Movies, Music, Photos etc. I never put my AppleTV into Standby and it has never frozen up on me.

I believe the work-a-round you are trying to build is almost impossible because you never know which sub menu it was left on. I love Apple products but Apple needs to get their crap together on the AppleTV and give the Custom Integrators discrete codes so they can integrate the AppleTV more effectively into projects.

Another option is to create a CAUTION PAGE on the remote so when you select Power Off while in an Apple TV Mode a screen comes up and says...

PLEASE PLACE YOUR APPLE TV IN STANDBY BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN THE SYSTEM.

Have just the Menu and Nav buttons on the screen with a button that says
OK, CONTINUE SHUT DOWN

This will prompt the user to manually shut down ATV and then continue the System Power Off macro

Also had a Apple TV and not a fan. You would think Apple would think about these simple issues when updating

If so many people give up trying to control the Apple TV, maybe I shouldn't give it a try at all. I like Apple product, but this Apple TV is becomming a disaster.

I think this CAUTION page is the best idea to deal with it.

It's a shame.

In their History Apple has followed the 3 fold path of releasing gimmicky hardware or software widget.

1)Make sure that the new widget does not communicate with, promote or work with any other tech gadget on the market. Make every connection and software option possible proprietary.

2)Spend 15 times the amount of money you spent to make the sure the widget works in the first place marketing the new widget as the second coming of Christ

3)Rely on consumers new found faith in the Apple Christ product that they will just bend over and eat every snag, hiccup, malfunction or upgrade.
