Again, the next firmware update will allow you to view the Escient interface on the Nevo unit.

Ok, that's the specific answer I was looking for. I know some people had been looking at the NevoSL and the WiFi capabilities as a way to surf the net. The screen size is pretty small for that (as anyone who has used a QVGA PDA can tell you) but an optimized version for the NevoSL's screen res takes care of that. Very good to hear.

By the way, another interesting device is coming down the pipe that could be used for the current full size version of Escient's browser control. The Nokia 770 is an "internet tablet" (no cell phone capabilities) with a 4.17" screen at a res of 800x480. Still requires vertical scrolling, but not bad for a handheld device of its size.

My hope is to point the Nevo Server software to the music files sitting on the fireball share (obviously the Nevo software won't be able to read FLAC files). The server software would be loaded on a Windows PC with a network drive mapping to the Fireball share. On the remote itself, you would be able to see the meta data provided by the server software. This is just a hypothesis--I have no idea if it would work. Either way, my plan is probably moot as the next revision is providing Escient support.

software update coming soon! I was a bit miffed that UEI didn't release the software on the anticipated date 10/31/05, but i've "heard" that it will be well worth the wait. Looking forward to seeing what additional options we will have, in addition to hopefully gaining metadata feedback w/ escient. Can't wait for that update.

I was able to get into contact with a Nevo rep and here's the latest information on controling an Escient system with a NevoSL:

1. Yes, it will definitely work, but you must make sure to upgrade the firmware on both the Escient system and the NevoSL unit.
2. From the remote, you will be able to browse the audio content only. Sorry, no DVD control support yet.
3. Album art (appearing on the NevoSL) is not supported at the moment though.
4. When controling the Escient through the NevoSL (meaning, when you create a "media zone" in NevoStudio software), the Escient will only be the server, and not the server and player. What they meant by this, is that at the moment, you can browse the Escient content and send it to another UPnP player (D-Link Media Lounge, NevoPlayer software running on a computer, etc.), but you cannot send the Escient content to play through any of it's outputs.

Granted, this system doesn't have all the bells and whistles yet, but for NevoSL to be the first remote that can do this, I think it's pretty cool.

The NevoSL forum is cool, don't get me wrong, although I think it would be awesome if there was a NevoSL section in the "Files" section as well. I would love to be able to share graphics, configs, etc. (especially now that Nevo update 1.1 supports hex editing).... just a thought.... :-)
