does running a cat 5 to the attic and installing the antenna up there away from the equipment, help in both eliminiating rf problems as well as improving remote distance?

Not necessarily. Don't think of a RF antenna in the same light as a terresteral antenna, as you may be adding to the problem with stray RF from other sources. Best bet is to run it low (between floor joists or along baseboard).
