I have owned the MX-500 for over 4 years now and really love the remote, now I want to make it a bit more user friendly. I know I’m a little late in the game for this one: BUT does anyone have or know where I can pick up the IR-Clone for the MX-500? Please email at [email protected] with any specifics.

Thank you,

Mike J

If you haven't already, you might just consider upgrading. There are quite a few things the MX-700, 800, 850, 900, and 950 remotes can do that the MX-500 never could do.

One of the biggies is the ability to put a press or a hold macro on the device keys. This means when someone presses say the DVD button you can program the remote to turn on the DVD and switch everything on the way you want it. They don't have to remember to press M2 or whatever.

My MX-500 couldn't control all my devices unless it was pointed just right, whereas it doesn't matter with an RF model and a base station.

Yes, I'm looking into the MX-700 as the 800 seems a little expensive for my budget. Just hard to part with the MX-500 as I like the remote so much, just thought the irclone would make it shine like new again :>). Anyway if anyone knows where I can pick up a slightly used MX-700 for say, $75 or less please let me know. And, yes I’ve been keeping my eye on the ever so famous eBay...

Oh yea, meant to ask about the URC software hoopla; wouldnt that make it harder to pick up a used (cheap) MX-700 with the software?

Thank you,

Mike J

Used MX-800's generally sell for $100 or less. I'd recommend that over the MX-700 incase you wish to try the RF capability in the future. I've bought two and they both had legitimate serial numbers which will allow you to download the s/w, but not the "live update" software. Before buying you'll want to check with the seller and find out whether they will supply the s/w and/or if they purchased from an authorized dealer.

I opened the cases on mine and cleaned out the remote and cleaned the contacts and they work well. The gemstone buttons hold up well, and the remote is pretty well sealed from hair and dust, but the contacts can get dirty over time causing popular buttons to become intermittent.

Anyway, just some options if you can't find an IRclone, or find a good price. I'm not sure, but it's possible you might be able to just purchase a certain model USB IR box, and then convince some kind soul to email you the IRclone s/w. I believe they were giving this away as a free download before the web site vanished.
