Is there an alternative to the 9 pin serial?

I'm running Windows XP, and would like to be able to not worry about having an RS-232 port...in other words a "legacy" port. Is there a USB Cable for connecting the MX-700?

Prolific-based USB-to-Serial adaptors work well. See this thread.
