I have an MX-700 and have had it for some time (probably three years). I read about the new policy of Universal Remote Inc to only support those who purchased from authorized dealers. I'll avoid the discussion of the merits (or not) of that, and just describe the facts.

Frankly, I don't even remember who I purchased the remote from, although I do remember the talk at the time that it was important to buy from an authorized dealer because of warranty issues, and so I remember that being an issue for me when I wanted to buy it, and so I'm sure that I bought it from an authorized dealer.

In any event, I saw a posting from Eric Johnson of URC about how to get the most recent software ( I do have have version 1.12.236). The registration page that it brought me to asked for my serial number. I looked in the battery area, and this is exactly what the label inside the compartment says:

(I had to get out my magnifying glass!)

MX-700-N VER: 1.0
0803 000343

There is a barcode between the two lines.

The URC website doesn't recognize this as a valid serial number. I don't know what to do to get the newest software, except ask the forum for the most appropirate solution (as in...what's the serial number!). Obviously, I would like to be able to get online updates and would hope for your consideration in that regard from URC (as I've owned this thing a long time, and actually don't add or change a component very often), but whatever happens, happens. In any event, I've yet to hear from Mr. Johnson.

Thanks, in advance for the help that this forum may provide.

Registering it online will only get you the software without live updates. If you want the one that does the updates then you will have to find the dealer who sold it to you. If you can't remember you will just have to beg and plead with URC to give you the new dealer software and hope that will get you somewhere.

Thanks...at this point, I'm in the begging and pleading stage; I can't even get the newest version of the software, which I'd like just so I can import a configuration file (for an individual device)...I can't even get that because it doesn't recognize my serial number. If I could just download the latest sofware I'd be happy. Do you know the latest version number?

I believe the latest software for the MX-700 that you can download from URC is 1.12.267. To register you would use K or KR from the dropdown menu and enter 000343 in both spaces; it should end up looking like this K 000343 000343. I believe this should work for you.

Actually all you should have to do on the registration page is leave the dropdown list set to NONE (if you don't have a letter combination on the sticker don't use one on the reg page) then insert 2 zeros in front of the 0803 so it is 000803 type in the last set as you have it already and all should be well.

I have bought from an authorized dealer and have received a site to download the software from (Using it as well)

Looked at the URC registration site

Question: should I register my unit, or is it unneccessary? (I'm living also outside USA, in Finland - the form doesn't appear to have a country box...)

Now I'm using the new software, and for some reason the tabbed "tree" window ,showing the mx-700 and the sidekick, does not appear...so I can't import single configuration files. Is there a way to fix this? I've deleted and re-installed the software, and no difference...and I'm a bit panicked, because this is the only PC -- out of 6 -- that has a legacy serial port that I can hook up the MX-700 to.

Any thoughts?

(And is there a USB version of the MX-700 Cable?)

Well I don't have a letter in front of my serial number, but had to choose K in order for the page to recognize it as a valid serial number.

As far as the tree view not being there, open the editor, move your cursor to the far left of the screen and slowly move it back toward the right a bit. See if a double-arrow cursor pops up. That window can't be closed, but it can be shrunk all the way to the left.

(And is there a USB version of the MX-700 Cable?)

There is no other cable for your MX-700 the serial cable it came with is all that will work. (Unless, of course, you use a USB to serial adapter which won't really benefit you unless you have to use a PC with no serial port)
