Boy - it gets better and better. The "locked" software is no longer available on the URC site. At least I couldn't find it. And the old link no longer works.

It's still there but harder to find, it is a link from the "Professional" page. Here is the registration link: [Link: universalremote.com]

Thanks - sorry for the misinformation - but I did try and find it - they hid it well.

What exactly do you mean by crippled? I just bought a MX-850 Aeros Online. I am hoping to download the software and program my Home Theater.

If you bought from an authorized dealer or CI (see URC's site for complete list) you will need to get the software from the AD or CI. Some have had problems receiving the software from AD's such as newegg. I recently purchased from ProRemotes and did not have a problem.
If you bought from an unauthorized dealer you should be able to download software directly from URC (this assumes that you have a serial number located in the battery compartment). This software will not allow future updates (hence crippled).
If you do not have a serial number you will need to contact URC and hopefully they will give you a copy of the software.
Someone correct me if I made an error.

Prior to purchasing my MX-900, I checked out this forum and saw threads regarding Authorized Dealers vs. Ebay dealers, ultimately purchased from Pro Remotes. I called them up and spoke personally with them and in addition to EXCELLENT customer service, they gave me a very good price.

Now that these issues have arisen with software updates, I contacted them via email and got updated software within an hour! I pressed the auto-update feature and it is once again functional.

I am so glad I decided to use Pro Remotes!

The very good price part is what many buyers are not aware of. All they see is the remote they want is half of MSRP on Ebay. I paid $20 more (each) for the 2 MX-850's I bought (from an AD) over what they sell for on Ebay.
A small price to pay for a warranty, live updates and great service.

Not true. Did you read my post? I paid $199 plus $10 postage from an AD. The same remote on Ebay sells for $189.95 plus $20 postage:
