I have an MX-700 that is about 3 years old and decided it was time to purchase a new remote. Although I obviously don't post much here I have found this to be an excellent site with a wealth of information. I was somewhat surprised to hear the recent news that URC released and seriously considered looking at another company's remotes. I have been very happy with the MX-700 and after doing more research decided on sticking with URC. I initially looked into the consumer line however these looked like they would be more difficult to program to meet my requirements. I ended up deciding on the MX-900.

My real purpose for this post is for those interested in purchasing a URC product. I ended up purchasing from Pro Remotes but not before calling URC. I spoke with a CSR at URC and asked questions directly related to Pro Remotes authorized status and how downloads and updates are controlled. I was very surprised to learn that authorized dealers, not URC, controls whether consumers are able to receive updates; apparently some dealers and/or CI's don't allow updates. I specifically asked if I could receive updates if I purchased the remote from Pro Remotes and I was placed on hold. The CSR eventually came back and said that Pro Remotes supported updates. I next asked what would happen if Pro Remotes went out of business or lost their authorized status. After some hesitation the CSR stated that I would have full update benefits.

I would also like to mention that my local HiFi shop that does custom installations and is apparently an authorized dealer is not listed as such on URC's site; this was enough to make me look elsewhere. A note to authorized dealers and CI's, I would check URC's site to verify that you are listed.

If any of the above is not correct please correct me; I received this information directly from a CSR at URC and understand that this CSR might have been incorrect.
Thanks for listening,
Mike

Your information is correct. When in doubt, contact URC to see if a dealer is authorized.

If your Authorized Dealer or CI does not provide you with LiveUpdateable software, that is their choice, however it is also your choice to buy elsewhere should you desire.

Tech support for the software is now in the hands of the dealer or custom installer you bought it from, with URC as a last resort for extreme cases where your dealer goes out of business and the like.

So, you have a good remote from a good authorized dealer with fully functional software. It really is that easy to purchase for the DIY'ers, and it really isn't that hard for anyone to get themselves straightened out in that regard if they have purchased a URC remote in the past.

Well the MX-900 showed up. I emailed Pro Remotes around 4:45 for access to the software and figured that I would not receive a reply until after the holiday so I downloaded the software from URC's site. I programmed the remote and checked my email only to discover that Pro Remotes had actually responded around 6:00.

I ended up uninstalling the software from URC and installed the software from Pro Remotes. I did a live update and everything worked as I hoped it would.

Just thought I would update for those (consumers like me) concerned about purchasing a URC Remote. So far so good!

edit: Just wanted to add that I would definitely recommend Pro Remotes based on my transaction with them.

Sure except for those who "unknowingly" already bought from an unauthorized dealer there are many very legitimate sources to buy these remotes that are not considered "authorized" by URC. That is the major problem with this New policy it leaves many unsuspecting customers "stung".
