I just bought a new Pioneer DVD-79AVi, and have been trying to get it to work with my MX-950. There's no 79AVi in the database, but I tried the 59AVi (which has the same "remote number" that's listed on the 59AVi: VXX2893). Only the Play, Pause, Stop, and Scan back/fwd work.

Anybody else have a trick before I just learn the whole remote? I was pretty sure the 59 and the 79 had the same IR set, but it doesn't seem to be.

Just learn the commands to the 59avi layout.

If you hit the 'continue' in the 'learn' box, you would have been done in less than a minute.

yeah, learning is better.

In my setup, mostly 95% are learned because sometimes I am not satisfied on how the pages setup is done on most devices (when i use the IR database) so I end up rearranging and renaming the buttons and re-learning them again.

My Pioneer Elite wouldn't alsways work properly with the database IR codes, so I ended up learning most of those as well. I think there may be an issue with UR's code database re: Pioneer equipment anyways, so I'd suggeste (as others have mentioned) that you just learn them all.

You mean that DVD you purchased does not have discrete ON/OFF?
So it is toggle ON/OFF?

But you have an MX-950, You can solve that problem easily with variable macros.
Daniel Thoinks shows you how to do it in his MX-950 review (variable crash course).
If you still have problems, try to download and play with the MX-950 configuration in the URC-MX series files section and acquire the strategy on how a defined power variable is used to keep track of the ON/OFF states for toggled power devices.

Have you tried any of the usuall work-a-rounds?

Try pressing 'play' and see if it turns on. Or 'stop',stop','play'.

DV-47 or 45 IR codes work

Then of course, PLAY (pause for 5 sec) POWER for "semi-discrete" off.
