I would like to purchase a remote for my husband for Christmas. Well . . . maybe more for myself. There are alot of choices out there and not alot of time. What do you think about the MX-850? I like that it is computer programmable and has the same look and feel as remotes my husband is already familiar with. The editor listed all of our components except a Sony CD player and an old RCA VCR. I'm not sure I will be able to find codes for the VCR and the MX-850 can't program directly from the remote.
Thanks for your feedback!

The MX-850 is a great choice. It is a very powerful remote and is relatively inexpensive. If you don't see all of your components listed, the manufacturers will often reuse codes from other models. For example, if you have CD RM22, the CD RM12 may use the same code. There is also the Files section here on Remote Central, where you can download codes that others have learned to their remotes. If neither of those options work, you can always learn from the original remotes.

I agree totally, especially as the 850 looks like remotes you have used. And presumably liked.

You CAN learn directly from the original remote. You weren't saying you don't still have the RCA remote, were you?

And this choice is doubly appropriate since you like it, as what we sometimes (privately) refer to as WAF, Wife Approval Factor, is a large factor in the choice of a remote.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

So you can program it from other remotes? One of the User reviews stated that you could not program the MX-850 from other remotes, only from the computer. I do have all of the individual remotes.

Yes, I have seen this WAF term used throughout postings. Should I be offended at the implication that women aren't technically savvy? In our household, I'm in charge of the technology. My husband has shown no interest. So I guess I need a HAF, husband approval factor.

To be perfectly PC, let's all use SAF for spousal approval factor.

I would Look at the 850 as everyone else has mentioned. It gets the SAP in both cases. Fits in 1 hand and is back lit

My wife is Queen of the House, and the MX-850 is her scepter.

As stated, yes it can learn from the original remote.

Absolutely not. These guys don't realize women just want it to work reliably and conveniently. That's why the 850 has been so popular with wives. Most men like touch screens to impress their buddies.

You are a REAL WOMEN!
I am certain he will love it. If your gear is hidden behind cabinetry, you might want to consider getting a mrf-300 to go with it. As for cost, did you ever ask how much that nice piece of jewelry set him back? Didn't think so.

The MX-850 does have a very high xAF (LOL). It is true that you need to program it through the PC, but you can learn individual commands from the other remotes. I think that's what was being implied earlier.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

My wife loves using the 850 over all of the other URC remotes, but then she was weaned on an MX-500. ;-)

Having used a MX-500, 700 , 800 and 850 over the past 5 years has got her pretty used to it.
