So the idea is to use a PC as an input to a house audio system...preferably the software wouldn't matter, but it could be Winamp or Windows Media Player or any other 'standard' MP3 player.

The hard part is controlling it...has anybody stumbled on any sleek and easily implemented solutions for controlling MP3 software with the MX (or any other infrared remote). I know it's hard to blindly control MP3 playback (not sitting in front of computer where you can read the list of song files) but assuming you created some playlists and wanted basic transport control, how's a good way to do it?

ATI's remote wonder sounds like da bomb, but of course it's RF only (X-10 had a similar product a few years ago, it pretty much blew as I'm assuming the ATI does as well) - also worth noting, I am not looking for 'cursor' control, just playback of any MP3 software.

I use the IR LiteOn Airboard Wireless Keyboard/Joystick Mouse.
The only problem is the MX-850 has a problem learning some of the IR codes. Fortunately the MX-700/MX-800 has no problem learning all the Airboard codes and since the .mxf files are compatible between the MX-850 and MX-700/MX-800, I have all the IR codes that I need working on a MX-850. If you don't have a MX-700/MX-800 to learn the codes, there are Airboard CCF files in the RC files section that can be used with the MX-Editor Universal Browser.
The Liteon Airboard is available here.

I would use a hammer instead of a remote to control the PC.

Would that be a IR hammer, or a RF hammer? :-)

Well truth be known so would I ... I'd also rather have an Audio Request Tera driving my MP3 collection and not my e-machine ;)

Hey, i'd settle for a Nitro.

Pilgram, it would be an IR, I want to see the metal give in to the beating.

Check out the Keyspan IR/USB remote control, you can find it through the Apple website. It will run many types of software, I use it with my AirPort Express to control iTunes (basic functions Play, Stop, Skip +/_ are included; you will have to write "applets" to skip playlists.) iTunes will automatically import all audio files on your PC, and is a free program. The Keyspan unit will run you about $70.00, plus the AirPort express and wireless card for your pc.
