When using MX-850 editor to download a complete program (system data, macros, learned data, etc.) to the remote, the remote is tested at the 25% download mark.

By watching the lcd screen on the 850, I notice that five tests are performed. The third and fourth tests are IROUT and IRAMP. Both of these tests FAIL. The first two tests both PASS, while the fifth test for light is SKIP.

I have two MX-850s and they both do the same thing. I have two different computers and the result is the same. The MX-850 editor software is version 1.12.231, the latest.

When I last used the MX-700 editor software to load a program to a 700, the first four tests all passed, while the fifth test for the light was still skipped.

Is it normal for the MX-850 remote lcd to display a failure for IROUT and IRAMP tests? What does failure of these tests mean? Both my remotes seem to be working properly even with these failure warnings.

What you have observed with the 850 is normal I believe, as all 3 850's I've programmed have acted exactly the same.

It is normal. You can get them to pass if you take the batteries out and then put them back in. What they are used for is beyond me however. I think they are read IR OUT, and IR AMP, so it obviously has something to do with IR.

Thanks for the replies. It puts my mind at ease.

Maybe Damon can enlighten us as to their purpose.

Yes... I would be curious as to what they are and why they might fail (and why it really doesn't matter if they do).

I'll confirm that the MX-800 does the exact same thing. Those two tests only pass when the unit powers up for the first time. They always fail on data upload (what MX-Editor calls "download" in error).

Hi guys....to clear up the questions about the "test mode" startup

The reason some of you see "pass" and some of you see "fail" simply depends on... at the point of battery insertion, Do you have the remote pointed at a reflective surface to bounce the ir signal back to the remote.

Try this test......pull the battery out and put it back in. then cup your hand over the ir cover of the remote. You will notice that the remote will Pass during the test. If you did the same thing while not cupping the remote and pointing it at say....a wall. The remote might say fail...Its looking for a ir signal to bouce back!....

either way..... regardless of the remotes "passing" or "failing" on the startup test mode, Its in no way related to the remotes ability to function properly.

In my opinion, they should get rid (or fix) the startup to make it less confusing to people who see fail!

The only theory I have is that because of the added RF capabilities, the IR test results turn out differently. If you set the remote to IR only, I think you'll find that it will pass. Give it a try and let me know what you find.

Thank you,
Damon DG
