I've had my MX-500 for over two years now and I'm extremely satisfied with it. I had originally programmed a few discrete codes into it with the old Palm Pilot application that turned your Palm into a "learning" remote. Sadly I no longer have that option and I was worried about ever losing some of the discretes I have and the ability to program future ones. I see that the ir-clone is no longer available (although I can't find the exact thread(s) discussing this) and I'm left wondering what options I have to program discretes into my MX-500. Should I opt for the URC 8910 or similar remote with a JP1 connector? I see that bluedo.com (where I originally got my MX-500) has them and are not too expensive. Is this basically my only option left?

I always carry around my Pronto with a huge database of discreets and hard to find IR codes loaded in it to help me out on jobs. you may want to ask a local custom shop if they have something like this for yourself.
Or maybe HTM will update your remote with the latest pre-pro codes. You may want to call them and find out if this is possible.
Just throwing some ideas out there for you.

If all you want is discretes, them the 8811 will do almost as well as the 8910. The 8910 does have upgradeability and a few more setup codes than the 8811, but with JP1 it really doesn't matter.

I recommend the URC-8811PKG (URC-8811 and JP1-Cable) as an inexpensive remote to get and program discrete codes. Plus, you have a remote to use elsewhere in the house! The URC-8910 adds a few things (LCD screen, phone upgradability) but as Mike mentioned with JP1 that doesn't really mean much. David www.BlueDo.com

Thanks for all the input everyone. I guess I'm going to go with the 8811 and JP1 cable option. Just out of curiosity, what kind of software is out there to help program the 8811 with discrete codes?
