I've had my MX 500 for 2 years now, but I just changed my satellite receiver to Direct TV's DVR/Tivo satellite receiver. It's also been 2 years since I have had to program any A/V components into my MX 500 and I am finding it difficult to do what was easy 2 years ago.

I have a Hughes satellite receiver which shows 2 set-up codes, 068 and 154. Neither worked with my MX 500. Are there any updated codes for my receiver? I would also be ok with "learning" the original remote with the MX 500, but isn't there a way to press one button on the original remote to send all functions of the original remote to the MX500 or do I have to "learn" each individual key with the MX 500?

Any help is appreciated.

No, you can't learn all commands at once. The preset code for dtivo is AUX 090. But you should teach, and but switch your receiver to address #1, so in the future you won't have reteach it, if you get a second dtivo.

Thanks Edmund, but I may need some additional guidance.

At the top of the original remote is a "Direct TV Central" button located at the top of the remote. I have not been able to teach that function to the MX 500. This button is "key" to accessing taped programs, system setup and a number of other functions. Without the use of this function, eliminates any need for the MX 500 when just viewing live or recorded TV.

I also tried the Aux 090 and I must be doing something wrong. Here's what I did:

Press Main/Ent button to enter set up
Press P-Pro button
Press Aux button
press Aux button again
press 090 and then save

Is this correct?

by the way, what do you mean I should "switch my receiver to address #1? I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you are referring to.

Yes, that should do it. After you programmed it did you try all keys with receiver on?

The preset code in the mx-500, is address "0", which will control all tivos no matter what address they're set to. So switching the tivo and its remote to the alternate remote address now, means you won't need to reteach it later if you get a second tivo.

To switch addresses, see this post.

Recent tivo remotes have given learning remotes problems, especially the FF command, see this thread.

Thanks Edmund. I changed the address to 1 and tried the preprogrammed Aux 090 code and it works. Several of the buttons don't make sense, but I'll work at tweaking them until they do.

Thanks again for your help. Its very much appreciated.

Yesterday, you helped me with a problem related to my
new Direct TV Tivo Receiver and programming my MX 500.
Your recommendation was to set the Aux code to 090.
This made the MX 500 functional, but the locations of
each key didn't make sense. A few examples are:

Previous Channel key on the MX doesn't work, but if I
go to page 1 in the Aux device key and press "A" I can
go the previous channel.

If I want to go to the "Now Playing" list, I have to
go into the Aux device key, go to page 2 and select
"A" or "C". Then I press "G" to select something from the
list. Now, I realize I can edit "A" to something like
PrCh for previous channel, but its strange to have the
functions on the device key instead of the actual
buttons on the remote.

The toggel keypad on the MX doesn't work at all.

The Exit button is now the "record" button

The Info button now stops Live TV

The Menu button resumes Live TV.

I tried learning the previous channel key from the
peanut remote to my MX, but after many attempts, it
does not work.

What is working is the Volume, Channel and Mute
buttons. I love the MX 500 and have been using it for
2 years now without a single problem. I can't believe
that adding a new component like Direct TV Tivo is
going to render it useless until we use our DVD, VCR
or Surround Sound System. Do you think my MX needs a
software update? I have tried every pre-program code
known for the Hughes Sat/Tivo receiver and none of
them work unless I'm doing something wrong.

Once again, any suggestions are more than welcome. I
have read numerous threads and none seem to have the
same specific issues I have with programming my remote.

Once again, I'm wondering if I need a software update.

Your older MX-500 might not have the proper code sets for the newer TiVos. Did you try code set for Phillips DSR6000 (090)? It should work for your Directv TiVo with no changes necessary. However you need to know some differences between the older TiVo code set (090) and the newer.
LCD buttons:
1-Live
2-Th Up
3-Th Dn
5-Clear
Hard buttons:
Prev Ch-TiVo
Stop-Slow
ENT-Enter (functions as previous chan)

Also on the older Series 1 Tivos (Phillips and Hughes [090]) there was no Guide button like there is for the Series 2 TiVos. Live button serves as the Guide function. To get Live to work as Guide use the TiVo button (Prev Ch) once so that your Series 2 TiVo recognizes that you are using an "older" remote which doesn't have a Guide button. You will have to do this again just once after your TiVo reboots or you use your peanut remote TiVo button.

Also I would leave the remote code set in the TiVo System Info to 0.

And make sure you're programming the code 090 correctly:
1. Erase any learned codes by using setup ERASE-LEARN-DEVIC for the device when you want TiVo device.
2. go to setup P-PRO
3. Select the LCD button where you want the TiVo device, any of the 10.
4. Select the AUX table code sets. This is button 5, the lowest one on the left set of 5 buttons.
5. Enter 090 and then SAVE.

Hiker:

Thanks for the info. You were correct regarding what buttons controlled the different functions. It seems like I have to learn all of the functions from the peanut remote to the device buttons on the MX 500.

Based on the problems I listed on this thread, is there another MX series remote that would learn better from the new peanut remote that comes with the DirecTivo Sat receiver? Or is it that the newer peanut remote gives out bogus IR signals that can't be learned on the MX series remotes?
