I have the MX-700 and am trying to program it to remotely 'fire' my Nikon D70 digital Camera.

In searching the net, there is talk that several of the other makes of remotes can control the shutter on the D70 so I know it is doable.

It is quite a daunting task to try all codes in the IR database for the MX700 so I was hoping that some one could help me.

I found this post on this forum:

but it does not make a whole lot of sense to me.

Sure would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Wow, that's a great idea! I look forward to seeing if this can actually be done. I'm sure it can...just a matter of finding the right code or buying/returning the 'real' remote and 'learning' the code.

From that post, it sounds like you just need to try some of the Sanyo TV codes. Assign all 7 codes to your MX-700 and see which one works.

Thanks for the idea but it did not work.

I did get it working though.

Here is how:

1) I grabbed a pronto ccf file from here that had the learned remote IR code for the Shutter release and put it into the Windows Copy buffer (CTRL C)

2) Then I followed the instructions described elsewhere in here for using Pronto Edit for making a simple ccf file with a single button called D70 where you paste the IR code into it.

3) Then I used the MX700 Universal browser to open that CCF file and drag the D70 button to a new button on the MX700.

4) Finally, by using macros, I have delays of 0,4,8,15 and 30 seconds before the shutter fires.

If the other poster is interested, I could put the mxf file in here.

I have had this MX700 for at least 2 years and it never ceases to amaze me how versatile it is.

Thanks for the help.

JoeQ,
I would love a copy of that mxf file if you don't mind. Please upload the file to the repository here. Man, that's one useful file for me. I never thought of using it for the D70. Should work better than the orig, if only for the powerful IR this remote has.

Thanks
Jerry

How do you attach files? I would love to get my hand on that as well!

If I did everything right, the file should be in the MX700 area sometime today.
Search on D70 or Nikon.

You fill out a description of the MXF file and then they send you an email where you replay with the files as an attachment.

I was lazy and did not bother extracting just the D70 into an MXD file so the entire MXF file is there.

Also, you will notice that I assigned the Play,Fast Forward and Select button all to the same code to make it easy to use.

The delays turned out to be a dumb idea so I should have deleted them but did not get around to it. By dumb idea, I mean that my idea was for it to wait x seconds and them fire the shutter. This would give you time to get away from the camera.
What was stupid is that you still need to point the remote at the D70.

If you read the reviews of the REAL remote for the D70, they say it has to be aimed carefully at the IR sensor. With the MX700, that is not the case.
I even found that when I had the camera on a tripod pointing out the window at my birdfeeder, the MX700 was so powerfull that I could stand way behind the D70 and the IR beam would bounce off the window glass and fire the camera - waay cool.

Using that method, I got a great shot with my 400 mm lense of a red tailed hawk who was hanging out up in the tree.

Well, I did everything I was supposed to do for uploading the mxf file but it never made it for some reason.

I emailed the moderator but have not heard back yet.

If anyone REALLY wants this D70 control for their MX700 then post back with an email address and I will send you my mxf file. From there, you can extract the D70 portion.

on a somewhat unrelated topic... have any of you experienced problems with programming macros on the MX700? the problem that I am having is that some of the commands in a given macro do not get sent properly. it's funny because if I press the button that the single command is assigned to, it works just fine, but in a macro it does not. i've heard of others having this problem as well, but I have yet to find anyone who has found a fix. anyone here have any idea?

thanks
