I recently bought a new mx 700 and enjoy it very much, but what was curious to know what is the differance between mxd and mxf files. I've only had success with mxd files and can't seem to get mxf files to work.

any suggestions?

mxf = MX Editor File
contains the entire remote configuration

mxd = MX Editor Device File
used via "device import" and "device export" and only contains a single device

Thanks for the reply.

one more question.

How are MXF files loaded to operate a device? For instance, I'm trying to configure the mx 700 to operate a Microsoft xbox?

From the left pane right click and select "import->device".

MXF files are opened by using "File - Open" on the pulldown menu.

MXD files are imported by the method Fletch stated above.

OK. Another newbie, blindfolded, holding the donkey's tail and the darn donkey is poopin' on my sneakers.

When I follow the above advice my MX editor program gives me an error message and shuts down. Trying again.......load a new template (on which I plan to store a bunch of Sony device codes).
How many devices to start with? (the last time I chose empty) This time I'll go the opposite extreme (chose 10 devices). Then I rename the main page to Sony. Now I'm ready to import .....time passing........I have browsed to my file called HTM downloads and highlighted SonyDVDVCRcombo.mxd recently downloaded from the HTM device pages. OK the import device page is wanting me to do something with the blue box, my instinct is to create a device key like VCDVD so I move the blue box over VCR2 and..... that doesn't do anything. So now I got to the box far left "Available devices"........ time passes... I highlight DVD and click on the right arrow. A box opens superimposed over the keypad window with the improbable heading "Used external devices" what the heck does that signify? Where is Doctor Spock when you need him? Highly illogical if you ask me ...what does this have to do with anything? Below is another box asking for information "Assign device to" I choose VCR1 (001 - sony device code?)...click OK and now am back to what looks like the LCD button editor but its not. How I mangaged this I don't know but there are now two (2) keys labelled DVD...did I do this? I sound the retreat and hit the save button..... The simulator has changed appropriately and I'm going to save this one device as the start of a Sony file so I file save it as Sony video device codes. By the way does it matter where I save this file? I searched around and found my other two remotes in "my documents" so I saved it there. This was not at all inituitive. Earlier today I thought I saved Sony discrete TV codes (mxf file - first Sony TV file in the HTM Sony TV device page) - I thought it worked - had the simulator all tweaked out - downloaded them to a remote - saved them (I thought) and now when I try to reopen the file from the MX editor file menu (file is there) I get a message "file not found".
A long sunny day spent hunched over the keyboard - yech...
Please comment. Any help or further explanation appreciated. Hugs accepted.

A newbie

On the left side of the "Import Device" window, highlight the device you're importing, then highlight the location you want it to go to on MAIN page 1 or 2. Hit the ">" arrow and when the next box appears hit "OK". Your device has now been imported.

Thanks . One thing that threw me off. Was importing a file for a combi DVD/VCR; I expected one device/page to cover it but the file was created as two separate devices VCR and DVD. And I still don't get this
"Used external devices" what the heck does that signify? In this case the field below this was filled in with "TV" - I ignored it and went on.
