I just purchased an MX 800 remote control and I am having major problems in getting it to communicate with any computer. I first tried on a Gateway laptop through the serial port and it tested on the TV fine, but when I attempted to download it to the remote, the remote gave me an error message “Fail! 1” and the computer gave me an error which read, “102-17UU-0000 Either the com port setting is incorrect (Communications Menu) or the cable is defective.” I have verified my port settings and they are fine, as well as disabled any activesync programs. I received the same error with a Compaq laptop. On a third computer (HP Desktop) I was successful in programming two devices before I started to receive the same error message. Now no matter how many times I boot up or turn off the computer, nothing works.

I know this may sound obvious, and probably isn't the problem, but I know when I first started I wasn't pushing the connector all the way in the remote, causing an error. It should make a nice, tight connection. Have you tried each serial port setting?

I wish it was that easy. I even purchased a serial to USB adapter in the hopes that it would solve the problem, but no luck.

I'm getting the same error with my new mx700. Anyone figure this out?

Problem solved. I found that the cable has an open connection somewhere next the the 3.5mm plug. When moved to a certain position it works fine. I confirmed the problem by cutting an old serial mouse cable and attaching a 3.5mm stereo plug to the other end. While using that cable everything works great. Now I can get to programming my new MX-800!
