I just got the mx500 and already love it. did a basic setup for most of the remotes but still need to setup the tivo for some functions and the LCD buttons for most frequently used stuff...

question 1: TIVO: it's the most used function now for me.. I want to set my main page for easy functions, my tivo button is the 2nd from the top on the right, cant I change it to the bottom right? And for setup's, anyone have something fairly easy and good to use?

question 2: System off button: all my av equip has a single power on power off button. I would love to have the system off be 1 touch shut down for everything, is it possible?

question 3: my tv may be set on tv,video1 or video 2. when i set a macro to watch dvd, I need to be on video 1.. but the remote doesnt know where the tv started, How can I resolve that in the macro, or cant I?

question 4: to power something on, I need to go to main page and choose another source to start it correct? for example, Im watching tv and decide to turn stereo on for volume, i go to main, hit audio, power on, go to main and hit tv again? anyway I can control tv volume AND stereo volume while under tv mode?

also, I have a ceiling fan i would like to control but I think its RF.. any suggestions?

Last: is there an actual pre program code for the TIVO system under aux. it wasnt in the manual

THANKS, by the way, this forum is incredible. what a site.

1. Yes, you can palce any button anywhere you want, then learn the command to that button.

2. Yes, but you will lose the individual functions of that button, since the macro will execute no matter what device you're in.

3. That's where discrete codes come into play and the reason for getting a One for All remote or IRClone. Look at my FAQ for more info.

4. You could place any command on any device if you learn it, including power or volume commands for other devices.

The code for most Tivos is under Philips: 090

Thanks Mike..

i referred to your FAQ page and it was quite helpful.. i also did some reading on the forum regarding Marks problem on the Jp1.

your recommendation urc 8811 for jp1 remote?

the only real discrete codes i would need are the separate power buttons to system off and for video input on the tv.. otherwise I think everything else is pretty straightforward and can be learned..

also, do you have a setup layout for your tivo, main page, etc to help me get an idea of how to set up the remote.

my products: denon receiver, sony vcr, sony tv, TIvo series 2, pioneer dvd player...

and regarding the ceiling fan, lights: do you know or anyone know what i could use to have the mx500 control lighting/fans? x10??

another question: regarding the mx500, i was considering trading it in for the mx700 which i am able to do, but will be paying a premium. is it worth it just for computer programming... I think it takes discrete codes also though?

Here's one example of a setup for Tivo:
[Link: barnettpage.com]

You should be able to control lights and your ceiling fan with X-10 and an IR543 to convert the IR from the MX-500 or 700 to X-10.

I prefer the added macro capability with the MX-700, especially for placing Tivo shortcut macros (to Now Playing, Search by Title etc.) on the first page of the Tivo device.

Yes - the IR543 is an X-10 device, available for around $20 from www.HomeAutomationNet.com

Regarding a TIVO setup here's what, after a lot of experimenting, works for how I like to use TIVO on the MX-500 (I like to be able reach all my most needed functions by thumb - may not be how you like to use it).

A) Hard buttons:

I put Playlist on PREV CHAN and TIVO Menu on DISPLAY and Enter on ENTER. I put Instant Replay on GUIDE and 30 second commercial skip on MENU and made the PLAY button into another Pause button (since I like to use those 3 buttons together). I also put the GUIDE/LIVE TV button on the STOP button.

VOLUME and MUTE control my receiver and Channel up and down control my cable box channels and all the rest of the hard buttons - transport, select, arrows, numbers etc. - do the same as they do on the TIVO remote.

B) Macros:

M1=To Do List
M2=Search by Title
M3=what programs are starting in next time slot
POWER=what movies are starting in next time slot
SYSTEM -- turns everything off

C: LCD Page 1:

TV ON -- RECEIVER ON
SLOW -- ENTER
SELECT -- PLAYLIST
CLEAR -- ROOM FAN
TIVO MENU -- LIVE TV

Page 2 has thumbs up and down and various audio receiver settings and VCR record and input settings (for recording from TIVO to VCR) as well as fan speed for room fan.

D: FAV MACROS

By pushing the FAV button I get access to:

To Do List -- Record by Time or Channel
Season Pass Manager -- Wishlists
Search by Name -- TIVO Suggestions
Browse by Channel -- Showcases
Browse by Time -- TIVO Menu
