Hi.
I'm confused as to which one is better. Apart from the more extensive capabilities of the 800 and the more versatile RF functionality, I'm guessing the two remotes are very similar.
I have two questions:
1. Which one is more ergonomic and easier to operate in the dark? Also, which one is easier to use (smaller learning curve for my wife...)?
2. With regards to simplicity, reliability, intuitivness and capabilities, which has the better PC interface?
Once I have these questions cleared away in my mind, it'll make it a lot easier for me to make my purchase decision.
Thank you much,

Raj

They're similar, but it's no contest - the MX-800 is much more advanced. In many cases, the macro capabilities alone make up for the price difference!

It's a tie.

I prefer MX Editor (MX-800) over IRClone-MX (MX-600), because you can do so much more with the MX-800, so there are a lot more ways to customize the remote. The MX-800's addressable base station is great compared to the more basic base station used with the MX-600.

You can download both pieces of software and play with them - you'll see what I mean. The IRClone software certainly takes adavnatge of everything that the MX-500/MX-600 has to offer, but it pales in comparison to the MX-800.

1. There really is very little difference between the two in normal use. The extra macro capability of the 800 can make it easier for others (ie: your wife) to use.

2. IRClone uses a USB connection and the cloning feature of the 600 to program it. The 800 uses a serial port with a direct connection to the remote. I find either software very easy to use.

The biggest differences are that MX-800 has double the device (20) and page-per-device (4) capacity of the MX-600, as well as the ability to program a macro on any button. The individually assignable IR emitters of the MRF-200 are another bonus.

Mike, David,
Thank you for your quick responses. It seems like I want to put the 800 on my Christmas list. Is there any disadvantage of buying an open box remote over a brand new one? I know I can probably get it cheaper on eBay than from an authorized dealer, but the lack of warranty bothers me. Plus, much more than that, I would ideally buy it from one of you guys since I see you on all the forums helping out newbies like me all the time, and to me that speaks volumes about your character and your commitment to customer satisfaction. What's going to be the hardest decision is to decide which one of you to buy from!! :(

Absolutely not. You save money and still have the full warranty.

from the more extensive capabilities of the 800
and the more versatile RF functionality, I'm guessing
the two remotes are very similar.

In other words, apart from the differences, how different are they? Well, one thing not mentioned here yet is the slightly different button layout. If you have a TiVo, the -500 has a *slightly* better layout.

As an ex-MX-500 w/ IRClone owner who moved up to an -800, and as a non-dealer, perhaps my opinions will lend another useful viewpoint.

I have two questions:
1. Which one is more ergonomic and easier to operate
in the dark?

I agree - they are the same.

Also, which one is easier to use
(smaller learning curve for my wife...)?

*If properly programmed*, the -800 will blow away the -600 because of its vastly-improved macros. Check out the section near the end of the MX-Editor manual on advanced programming tips.

2. With regards to simplicity, reliability, intuitivness
and capabilities, which has the better PC interface?

That's 3 questions. Now you must ask for retroactive question-asking privileges... Oh, never mind.

Actually, I preferred IRClone. I wish the MX-Editor would allow me to cut and paste learned codes. Not a big difference though.

Once I have these questions cleared away in my
mind, it'll make it a lot easier for me to make
my purchase decision.

Good luck.
