Geez, have had 700 sitting around for days trying to get a computer with a serial port on it. First tried my laptop...only has USB as it was manufactured in this decade. Bought USB-2-SERIAL adapter...didn't work (no communication, despite 2 hours of tweeking). Brought home old PC from work that was in surplus, but had a serial port. Didn't work as it had Win95 on it and MX-editor not compatible. For X-sake, I'm ready to give up on this remote until they bring it up to date.

I use a usb-serial adapter to program my 800. YOu might have tried this, but here goes anyway, a few tricks I have to use to get it to work.

One, make sure the usb port is labeled as the correct com port in Device Manager window. I think this can only be done with the adapter (and maybe remote) plugged into the USB port.

2. When it says it can't connect to the remote, hit retry about 4 or 5 times, it usually catches on the second or third try. Once its caught, it will be available there until you restart the computer. Even if you plug and unplug the remote.

3. Last chance is open the Program with the remote attached via adapter. Do numnber two above. If still no luck, leave the remote attached and close the MX Editor program and re open it (no need to restart the program). Then download to remote again. Force a retry and I can almost guarantee it will work this time.

Good luck, and FWIW, I agree that USB should be mandatory in this day and age.

Not that it helps the 600, 700 and 800 users out there, but the MX-3000 will use USB.
When ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise.

Thanks for the informative reply to my rant Ejfiii. Maybe I didn't retry enough times. I'll try some of the tricks you suggested tonight. I found a desktop at work with a serial port that I could use, but I was hoping I could find a laptop so I could sit in my HT and test the codes directly. Good news about the MX-3000....guess they figured it out by now. Even my cheapo mp3 player uses USB.

I just wanted to throw another option into the mix - you can purchase PCMCIA -> serial cards which could provide the same functionality.

Make sure you have the appropriate driver for the adapter. I've been using mine with no problem.
