I had previously asked about using a TI calculator cable with the MX-700. I looked up the wiring diagram and realized it is very different than that for the remote.

In a drawer in which I keep spare cables that come with hardware, I came across a very simple cable with a 9-pin serial port at one end and a 1/8" stereo plug at the other. I can't even remember what the cable came with. I realize noone can tell me what the pin configuration of the cable is, but my question is: can I do any damage by trying it with the remote? Or will it simply not work if it's not right?

I did get the Radio Shack components and put them together, but I am, to say the least, technically challenged. Let's just say I had extra pieces left over when I finished putting it together. I wasn't sure which ends of the little silver strips to crimp and they don't seem to stay in the holes very well. I'm not convinced I did it correctly.

I expect to have the remote delivered today and am anxious to try it. I'm not anticipating it will come with a cable.

Thanks very, very much.

That's also hard to say. While it's likely that it wouldn't be a problem, without knowing the pin configuration, connecting it to your computer and your MX-700 could damage either one or both.

If you don't get a cable with the remote (although I'm not sure why you wouldn't), get a serial cable from Tivo.com for about $6.95 here: Tivo Cable. They have the same pin-outs.
