I'm thinking there are 2 ways to set up the mx-500.

1. By function - Have a different page for each piece of equipment.

2. By goal - If I want to set watch a dvd I would setup the page with some dvd controls, tv controls for things like aspect, audio for volume etc..

How have you done it ?

I've done it more like your second choice, which is based on the activity (eg. "Watch a DVD, Listen to a CD"). You can set the "DVD" MAIN page button to turn on the appropriate devices and make the input switches, then go to the first page of the DVD device. You can then use the punch through capability to achieve some control from other devices and learn a command or two from other devices, as needed, to the LCD-labeled buttons.

Remember, the 10 device buttons on the MAIN page are usually assigned by device and provide all the commands for that device. However, with two pages of LCD-labeled buttons per device, there's often room to add commands from other components, so you can have it both ways. There are many ways to skin this cat. ;-)

I was thinking about using the 155 aux code and starting from scratch on ALL devices/pages.

Would that be easier ?

Don't forget punchthroughs, which allow things like volume buttons to use codes from different devices, so that even on the DVD device you will be controlling volume via your TV or your amp.

1. By function - Have a different page for each
piece of equipment.

Regardless of your decision, I think that you should put each device as intended. On the MAIN page, you look at all the different devices.

2. By goal - If I want to set watch a dvd I would
setup the page with some dvd controls, tv controls
for things like aspect, audio for volume etc..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but some macros would take care of your needs better than the overall setup.

I'd put each piece of equipment on it's own device in the remote. On the device's pages, put the specific controls like you mention above.

Then create macros for each activity - so M1 could be DVD (or you could put the DVD macro on the LCD button). M2 could be TV (or the TV LCD button). And so on! Macros are easy to change and adjust to your liking.

Then use punchthrough so that while on the DVD device, the audio is controlled using your receiver. So have the DVD macro end on the DVD page, and you're set!

Using the AUX 155 code up front can help avoid potential problems with macros and FAVs later on. Remember that all it does is apply an almost empty preprogrammed code to the device. No labeling is changed.

I have a combination of the two methods. It is mostly "by device" but I also have:
1) My TVs "aspect" key on the bottom right LCD button of every device (learned there).
2) FAV macros for lighting control of various moods
3) FAV macros for watch-HDTV, watch-DVD, watch-VCR, watch-SAT, watch-LAZER_DISC, etc.

If you have a PVR, save a global macro button (M1-M3) for skip-ahead-30-seconds-six-times.
