Forgive the newbie question.

In looking at the Denon files, I see the on screen display and the dimmer codes are the same (but a different device?). The 2803 remote and user manual doesn't reference this dimmer capability. Can anyone tell or explain to me if I can indeed learn this code (whatever it is) into my MX-500?

Yes you can but there are only 2 ways.

Either via the IRClone method (http://www.irclone.com) or by using a One For All/Radio Shack model that supports advanced codes ([Link: hifi-remote.com] You may need the JP1 protocol to get some of these codes though. JP1 is also discussed at this site.) The OFA/RS method is cheaper but IRClone brings some other neat tricks to the table. (IRClone shipping has apparently been delayed due to a parts issue. But they are saying they'll be ready to go again sometime in July.)

Your 2803 supports many advanced remote controlled functions that aren't on your factory remote. Features such as panel dimmer, video select function, direct volume jumps to 0,-20,-40, individual tuner presets and direct switching to surround modes (such as DPL II Music or Mono Movie, without toggling thru all of the other modes.) Many of these have been obtained using the OFA/RS method. But once someone who uses IRClone has them, they are easily traded between users.

Thanks. That's a start. I've got an old OFA 4060B04 sitting around. I'll see if I can the learn the Denon device 0004 which has the dimmer capability to it, then if so try learning the advanced code for the dimmer (213). If not, I'll go buy a cheap Radio Shack remote and learn the Denon base device to it...

Most of the other one discrete codes you mention I was able to learn directly from the Denon's remote (whatever it had).

Of all the codes that don't come on the factory remote, the video select and the direct volume jumps to -40 and -20 are the ones I use the most. Although I'm sure I would use the dimmer if my equipment was near my TV.

If you have any trouble, be sure to let us know. Lots of great help here!

HAN - thanks much. The old OFA 4060 worked just fine. Now can you tell me what are the advanced codes for preset jump to 0dB, -20dB, -40dB? I can't seem to figure these from the documentation I can find. I see that video select is device=160 with code=218.

Okay, I'm almost there. The piece of the puzzle I can't figure out is how to translate the Denon "device code" (i.e., 2, 4, or 12) to OFA Denon receiver codes 004 and 160...can anyone help?

NEVER MIND - FOUND THE ANSWER IN THE OFA FORUM!

Forgive my newbie question regarding this thread: why can't the Denon remote be used to program the MX-500? Does the OFA remote store it as a different string? I'm considering an MX-500 and want to know whether to get the JP1 and a OFA.

You only need the OFA remote (and/or JP1) to obtain commands not on your original remote. The poster was looking for some panel dimming and other commands not on the Denon remote.

Ah - I get it. That being the case, I can use my Pronto TSU2000 to bring in those "missing" codes or discretes.

Thanks!
