I am setting up a new HT and need a new remote. I currently have a MX700 and everybdoy loves it. A local high end store here in Cincinnati is clearing out their MX1000 remotes for $149. Is it worth the hassle of two different software programs? Is the MX1000 really that hard to program? Should I go $349 and get another MX700?

The MX-700 is a better remote. The MX-1000 will work very well if you don't expect too much from the PC programming or need to create a lot of custom graphics. While the MX-1000 is programmable right on the remote itself, it's a pain to do so. The MX-700 is also much more flexible in what it can do.

That's what I understand. But isn't $149 a great deal? I'm having a hard time passing it up.

If price is your motivation, I'd buy an MX-500 before an MX-1000 and save the extra money. I had both in my living room for 3 months before giving the MX-100 the boot permanently.

Obviously the MX-700 is a terrific, amazing remote and if you want a PC-programmable remote, it's my choice.

No, IMO I don't think $149 is that great. I picked up one from a guy that had hardly touched his 1000 a month ago for $100. (I haven't has time to tinker with it yet.) FWIW, I am a diehard 500/700 booster. But I wanted to mess around with a new toy...

OK. I bought the mx1000. I have had it for just less than a week. To make a long story short, it goes back tomorrow.

I always wondered what all the bitchin' was about, now I know.
