I need instructions or a link to a manual
that explains how to use this.

When I open up my editor and go to 'HELP' and then 'HOW TO' all of the selections (example- Upload/Download) that come up have no information and so I'm sitting here without a clue as to how to use this editor.

I'm not the brightest star in the universe, I'm from the camp that needs instructions, the more detailed the better...

I am sure the online help is coming soon, the software was released early to let us get a chance to use it since it is mostly functional.

Do you have any specific questions?

I have so many questions that I feel I need to read the instructions so I don't mess things up.

I guess the most important question is...

To be able to reconfigure the 500 you basically have to input the codes into the 500 and then into the IRCLONE or can you use a different remote to the IRCLONE and then transfer them to where you want them on the 500?

If I'm interpreting this correct you basically have to configure the 500 to your liking before downloading the information to the computer, if this is the case it almost seems like an extra step to achieve what you've already accomplished but I guess and I hope there's more to it than my simple assumption.

I think the intent is to evolve the software so that you can use the IRCLONE to capture codes directly from remotes as well as input them numerically. There is a capture key icon that doesn't seem to be active yet.
However as it is today it seems that the functionality is limited to moving buttons around, editing text, and creating macros and all IR captures must be done with the remote itself.

The only thing you have to do on the MX500 itself is to learn any learned codes you need.
Then you clone it into the 500e software with IRClone and re-arrange things to your liking.
It's certainly much easier to type the labels using the computer than to do it on the MX500 itself.
It's also much easier to make and tweak your macros.

Here's a little "Getting Started" guide, for what it's worth.
Let's call the Picture of the MX-500 on the right the "Graphic" view or Graphic window and the window on the left the "Tree" view or Tree window.

LABELS:
Use the graphic on the right to edit any LCD text labels you need to change.
You can do this in the tree view as well, I just find it easier to do in the graphic.
Just click in the text area and start typing. You can insert the special characters that aren’t on your keyboard by using the buttons that appear to the right. (You’ll see...)

DEVICES:
In the tree window, you can right click on any device to set the P-Pro device code and set punch throughs.
You can copy and paste everything from one device to another, or just from one button to another. Just use ctrl-c/ctrl-v or right click and select copy/paste.
If you copy an LCD button to another LCD button, the text is copied also.
You can erase a learned code from a button by right clicking and selecting 'Clear Button'.

Learned Codes on Device Buttons... These are kind-of a special case.
You can learn an IR code to any device button, and the MX500 will send the code anytime you switch to that device. (See the MX500 manual for how to do this)
If you have a learned code on a device button you'll see a red L on the device root in the tree view.
If you right click on the device, you'll see menu options for "Clear, Copy, Paste Device Learned IR Code"
You can copy any learned code from any button to any device button and vice/versa. The menu options are different since you can also copy and paste the entire device at once.

MACROS:
In the tree window, expand the macros by clicking on the little + next to MACROS.
Double click on a macro to open that macro in the editor.
Insert some steps and select the Device & button you want to send for each step.
You can insert a pause for any step except the last. The pause occurs after the step that it's on, before the next step in the list.
When you're finished, near the bottom of the editor window, select the device screen you want to have show when the macro ends. Click OK to save the macro.

FAVORITES:
Favorite macros work almost the same way.
In the tree view, double click on the one you want to edit. The editor shows the whole page at once. Select the one you want to edit, select the device for it from the drop down, insert and edit the steps.

TIPS:
Make a backup of your M5 file before you start editing. It's easy to copy over an entire device and there's no Undo function yet.

If you want to re-arrange your devices but you don't have any empty spaces, you can copy to a new blank remote temporarily.
Select File, New. to create a new empty remote. You can have multiple windows with different remotes open at the same time, just un-maximize your editing window.

If you want to copy a device or a button from another M5 file that you got from someone else, just open both files and copy/paste.

If you want to start programming everything from scratch, enter/edit all of your LCD text labels on all of your devices first. Then download it to your remote and start learning the codes you need to learn. I find learning is easier if you already have all of the labels. Then upload it back to the PC and set up all of your macros and any other tweaking you need to do.

Note: There are many ways to edit the labels, macros and buttons etc... These instructions represent my preferences. You may prefer to do it differently.

Good suggestions. I also set up mine like you suggested. Generate all the labels first then sit down with the remotes and fill in the codes using the learn function.
One drawback though, you can not cut/paste, drag/drop a label without a supporting learned code being present.

cweaver,
That's true but you can still highlight the text when editing and use ctrl-c/ctrl-v to copy and paste.

I'd like to find out if there is a better way to print out this thread than just using my browser's print mode. The Preview mode shows truncated text and lots of extra graphics. I would periodically print this as a sort of Tips/Shortcuts/Getting Starting addendum to the forthcoming manual for the IRCLONE-MX.

Any ideas? Daniel? I'm using IE 6.0

Thanks for your suggestions.

I would highlight the text with the mouse, copy it with CTRL-C and paste it into Notepad or Wordpad.

I'm having some trouble with the IRClone software-- I'm copying and pasting a device to another location on the main page (it's an older Sharp audio system). After downloading to the remote, the volume up/down buttons don't work. I've verified that they work properly from the original remote configuration; I downloaded my original backup version, and they work just fine.

Any ideas?

I have a similar problem that is somehow related to using punch through. I haven't taken the time to determine the root cause yet.

I am going to suggest that when you have done programming your devices that you go back and check

1 That the punchtroughs are set correctly and
2 That your macros are still pointing to the correct keys

This will be temporary as Dave will have to fix it upon his return. I apologize for the inconvenience.
