I am no techie but I have seen a lot of tech products around (as a VC), and I think USB connected program for a remote is an overkill since it is unlikely that it will be needed very often after the intial set up. So, I would think it should be possible to do this via IR ports available in most lap tops. What do you think?

Many people have asked this and the answer is that the IR port on a computer is actually IRDA, whereas a remote is IR. Two different protocols.

Do a search in this forum, since there is a technical answer that someone gave not too long ago.
