My mute button doesn't work when I have my mx500 in DVD mode but it works fine when I'm in cable tv mode?? When I learn the mute button in dvd mode I get the "good" command...I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas??

I'd guess that you have Punch-Through enabled - turn it off and it should work!

To disable Punch Through, you need to punch the device through to itself.

So, Punch Through your DVD to DVD, and then do the Punch Through again, if that is the way you want it set up, or learn the appropriate buttons.

The mute button works as a punch-through? The manual only mentions "Volume Controls", which I assumed was only the Vol+/Vol- toggle button. In this case, mine also didn't work in my HDTV device, but did work in my TV device, both contolling my reciever. I solved the problem by re-learning the command to the Mute button in the HDTV device. If it was on punch-though, shouldn't that fix have failed?

I'm confused... too bad I don't have the manual handy.

Punch through works on Volume Up/Down, Mute, Channel Up/Down, and the eight transport buttons for DVD or VCR. Punch through can be applied to specific devices, all devices or none. If you were able to relearn the button, it wasn't on punch-through from another device.

When you punch through VOL, the mute is affected too. This is a good thing. Why would you want the volume to control the receiver and the mute to control the TV or vice versa?

You're right the vol and mute should BOTH work the same way...that's what confuses me???

The vol and mute work fine when I'm in the "cable" mode and the volume also works in the dvd mode but the mute button only works in the cable mode?? If I'm punched through wouldn't the vol and mute buttons both work or both not work???

I tried to relearn the DVD mute and the remote says it's learned the command but it STILL won't mute.

Looks like I'm stuck going to the manual...which as everyone agrees isn't very clear.

Turn off the punch-thru in the DVD mode and teach both the vol and mute.

That's what baffles me?? I am able to lean the mute button in DVD mode but it still doesn't work. Guess punch through was a bad idea...is there any way to turn punch through off and just start over??

LOL... I couldn't agree more. I set all of my volume controls to be punched-though (there's got to be a better verb) to the receiver, and all of the Vol+/- toggles worked the same in each device. The mute did work for my TV device, but not my HDTV device. I re-learned the Mute in HDTV, and now it works fine, which should not have been possible if it was punched-though-to. At the same time, I re-learned the Vol+/- keys in the Audio device, and the changes (to single button push from repeating button) affected all devices, which proves that it's punched through to the same devices that I was able to re-learn the Mute button to.

I just tried to learn my TV's "power" command to my Audio device's Mute button -- it didn't work, which show's it's on a punch-though. I submit, take me away.

And, to give credit where it's due, my receiver's remote is really flakey and I've had to re-learn commands from it multiple times. The mute button working when I taught it in one device and not in another is not the fault of the MX-500.
