I have a MX-500 and need to teach it descrete codes. I want the cheapest route possible as my wife already thinks I'm crazy to spend $120 on a remote(she does like it though). Which remote capable of the descrete codes is the cheapest and easiest? Which RS model numbers do this? I searched for the 15-1994 but could not find it.

Jeff,

The old models (15-1994, Cinema 7) have been replaced. We recommend the URC-8811PKG which is the replacement for the Cinema 7 and comes with the JP1 cable as well.

RS # 15-2104 6-in-1 @$25, or the newer 15-2116 8-in-1 @$30

But if you need a JP1 cable, and don't wish to make one. Bluedo.com is selling what he mentioned above for $41 cable included. So his price is about what a RS unit would cost with a cable. Even if you made your own, you would only save about $5 or so at the most. And just try finding a 6 pin IDC connector somewhere. As you need to either mod a 10 pin or butcher a HD cable to make do with something. As RS does not have any female IDC connectors for sale.

But if I were to find a cinema 7, can it do the codes for my MX-500 to learn from?

Yes. But only if the codes you desire exist. A lot of brands of components do not have any descrete codes at all. No matter what remote is used.

Here some more data on the Cinema7. Keep in mind some of it is somewhat out of date now.
