Do the device macros on the MX-500 only access commands on that specific decice??
(My quesions are based on the fact I cannot actually try one of these units before I buy.)

No, they can store commands from any device. For example, go to TV, Power On, Select Input, Select Screen Size. Go to Audio, Power On, Select Input, Mode. Go to Cable, Power On, Mute, etc.....
