I have posted several messages here on the woes of the GS2 joystick. (Had to return two units because I couldn't get "Select" to work, bitching about design changes, etc.)
I think I should post an update. After several fruitless attempts to purchase an older unit with the original joystick, I decided to try one last time and order a new GS2 unit.
The verdict: "Select" is a little stiffer than I would like, but
IT WORKS!
IT IS RELIABLE!
I don't know if I just got two consecutive bad remotes or if HTM has quietly upgraded the joystick. I'm just pleased that I finally got one that works.
I thought the least I could do was to announce in public that I am shutting up.

I believe that HTM quietly upgraded the joystick. I have a newer sample that works exactly how you explained. Still a little bit stiff to press the SELECT button, but virtually no wobble.
You will no doubt see the same thing happening on the MX-700 as existing stock is moved.
