I have wanted a third MX-500 for months, but I refuse to deal with the new thumbpad. Now, I have moved and I desperately need something like this remote.
Can anyone suggest a good alternative to the MX-500?
Better yet, does anyone have a used MX-500 with the old-style thumbpad that they would be willing to sell?

In terms of all hard-buttoned remotes, there's not much at this end of the scale. If you want a thumbpad there's only the Sony RM-VL1000, but it's got its own set of issues (but a very good joystick).
Other higher-end hard buttoned remotes... Xantech URC2P, HTM SL-9000, HL-UR371, One For All URC-8910.

Daniel,
Thanks for the lead. I checked out the Sony and the negative press is scaring me away. I think I'm just going to post a new thread hoping someone will sell me an old MX-500.

Daniel,
Do you know if the URC-8910 will allow learning of advanced codes like the URC-8810? I need a second "good" remote for the bedroom components that will double as an advanced code input device for my MX-500. I tried the RS series but they're hard to see at night. Thanks.

Yes, the 8910 can use advanced codes.

They don't learn advanced codes, the codes are preprogrammed into the remotes, But yes the 8910 accepts advanced codes.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative to the MX-500? There is no good alternative to the "MX-500 with the original thumbpad" for even twice the price. G.

I have done a lot of badmouthing of the MX-500 thumbpad on this forum. Things have changed. The following is a copy of the message I posted on another thread.
--------------------------------------------------
I have posted several messages here on the woes of the GS2 joystick. (Had to return two units because I couldn't get "Select" to work, bitching about design changes, etc.)
I think I should post an update. After several fruitless attempts to purchase an older unit with the original joystick, I decided to try one last time and order a new GS2 unit.
The verdict: "Select" is a little stiffer than I would like, but
IT WORKS!
IT IS RELIABLE!
I don't know if I just got two consecutive bad remotes or if HTM has quietly upgraded the joystick. I'm just pleased that I finally got one that works.
I thought the least I could do was to announce in public that I am shutting up.
--------------------------------------------------
Greg responded that he thought the thumbpad had been upgraded.
