I just got an MX-500 last week and must say I am impressed. This remote replaced 7 individual remotes and even provides remote control for my JVC CD Deck, which I purchased as an open box sans remote. The final icing on the cake is the fantastic WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
I have just two remaining issues that I would like to request help to resolve.
1. The afore mentioned CD Deck is a JVC XL-M505. I cannot find a code that works to turn it on and off. The MX-500 codes sets up the power button to open and close the CD tray. I even got a Cinema 7 remote and can't even locate an advance code to switch the CD on or off. Anyone have any suggestions?
2. I have a Yamaha receiver (RX-V870) and a Yamaha cassette deck (K-90). Every power on and off code I can find for the cassette deck also powers the receiver on and off (gee, and I remember one of the reasons for getting the Yamaha cassette was because I thought I could integrate components from the same maker with less hassle!) Again, does anyone have any suggestions?
TIA Brent Harritt

1) No CD players that I know of are able to be turned on and off via remote. They all have to be switched on by hand or using something like X-10 to power it on.
2) Don't know.

Brent: Did you have remote power on/off for the cassette deck before? If you did, and it didn't turn off the receiver, you could teach the command to the 500.
If you didn't, then it appears that Yamaha took the approach that the on/off button code turned the entire system on at once. Then once the system was up, you switched to whatever source you wanted. This is the method most custom installers use. Power it all up and then switch to the source of choice. This helps prevent "less technical" users from tryin to switch to a source that isn't turned on yet.

Brent,
My current Pioneer CD/DVD changer DOES have it's own toggle power code, but I used a Sony CD Changer before this that did not. So I chose to plug it into an outlet on my receiver, which made the CD changer power on anytime I powered up my receiver.

Thanks for your inputs.
As I mentioned, I never had a remote for the JVC CD (and I can't even find the manual and JVC does not have them on-line) so it may well be it has no remote power on/off (which strikes me as dumb). At any rate, I went from having NO remote control of the CD to atleast being able to select disks and tracks, set up random play etc. from the remote.
I did not get a remote with the Yamaha tape deck (it did not come with one as it was designed to operate with the Yamaha receiver remote). I have also since realized (duh!) that I have the tape deck plugged into the switched outlet of the receiver and never did have separate tape deck remote on/off.
Bottom line is I can live with this situation. Thanks again.

I would bet that you are out of luck with the receiver+CD. I have an RCA receiver and an RCA VCR that have convinced me to never again buy a receiver that was built by the same company as any other component.
VCR power on changes the receiver to VCR input, which I don't use. VCR (discrete) power off will power off the receiver if you press it twice, but it will turn it right back on if you press it again.

so it may well be it has no remote power on/off (which strikes me as dumb). Every single time I have to get up to turn on my CD changer I think the same thing. But, you'll find few, if any, CD players that have remote on and off. That's why I've just started into X-10. ... Greg :-)
