RE: The TV-Video button.

What I meant (regarding where you wanted the TV
input buttons) was that you can have the discrete
TV input with each associated source. You could
put it on the 1st page of each device or make
it part of the source changing macro. This would
eliminate the toggling around to find the right
input. Each source would go directly to the correct
one every time...

That's great, but where do I find the discrete input codes for the TV/Video toggle on my 5-year-old Toshiba Cinema Series TV???

My TV's remote has a single TV/Video button that causes the TV to cycle through its video inputs. (pardon me if it's a dumb question, but I'm a newbie)

Daniel's excellent glossary on discrete codes ( [Link: remotecentral.com] ) says that many devices don't have discrete codes, while discrete codes are unknown for others. Alas, it appears that my Toshiba TV is on his list of such TOADs (i.e., my TV doesn't have discrete input/video codes).

So, it appears that I (and some others) cannot do as suggested in the quote above?? Therefore, whither the essential TV/Video button on the MX-500? Seems that without this button, for some users the MX-500 will be somewhat lacking.

Judy

Judy: Even if your TV doesn't have discrete commands for what you want, the MX-500 is still the ticket.

The best solution is a macro. IMO, the best way to accomplish this is to make it part of the source changing macro. You can even test the steps without the MX-500 in hand. Just key in any regular broadcast TV channel number (like 06) , then count the number of TV/Video steps to get to the correct input. If you key the same steps as part of the 500's source changing macro, you'll always get the right input (due to the channel number always being the same starting point prior to the TV/Video input change.)

You can key a similar macro for every source and always get the right one.

Han, YES that clever technique will do the trick perfectly!

I'm a convert... a TV/Video button would be redundant clutter! (especially for audio) Gee the designers DO know what they're doing.

While your technique works around the absence of discrete input codes, have you a macro programming algorithm to solve the absence of discrete power codes?? (both my TV and DVD are Toshiba TOAD devices)

Judy: While I'd love to take credit for any of these macros, I can't. (sigh) Pretty much all of these have been passed around here and there. Oh well...

The DVD player has one that works nearly everytime for most brands. Just send the play command for your DVD power on macro instead of the DVD power command. Most units will turn on when receiving the play command. And, if it's already on, it stays on. Then just use the DVD power command to turn it off.

The TV may be a different story. That's one I've not ever found or thought of a way to get around. I also run a Toshiba TV. In my case, there's no one else living here to get confused on system power ups and power downs, so it's not an issue for me. But I could easily see how it could be...

Hopefully someone else reading this can help us with the TV.

As HAN mentioned, with the DVD player, if you program a macro with "Play" and "Stop" in it, that will turn your DVD player on when it's off, and do nothing if its already on. Similarly, a macro with "Play" and "Power" in it will turn the player off it's already on, and on and off if its not.

I haven't seen any Toshiba TV discretes except for some of the newer models.

Just key in any regular broadcast TV channel number (like 06)

CH+ or - work just as well, and you only need one step :-)
