I programmed in the vol+ and vol- for my pioneer reciever. The vol- repeats and behaves as you would expect when you hold it down. The vol+ requires that I press it repeatedly as holding it down does not work.

Overall I've found the IR learning ability of the MX700 to be inferior to my IRIQ, and the wacky rituals they document in the manual (flutter et al) reflect this. It refused to learn the "down" key on my DVD remote. It took a few tries to get the mode key for my TV. Actually, now that I think about it the only remotes I've had problems with are the Pioneer ones. I ended up importing then modifying stuff from the database.

The ability to pick and choose codes from the databse would be nice. Say I already manually programmed a gob of stuff, but found that one or two keys will not learn? It would be nice to browse the IR database and pick and choose codes to try without having to import the whole device and overwrite the existing programming. They need to unbind the IR code database from the physical layout of the remote.

Now, that said, this unit still kicks ass. These are minor nits of a geeky nature. For the first time EVER I feel no need to keep my other remote anywhere but in a drawer.

Usually, buttons that are designed to repeat, but don't when you learn them to the MX-700 means you aren't holding down the button on your original remote until the software says GOOD.

You need to hold the button down, not just give it a quick push.

Waiting for the "GOOD" message made no difference. To get the vol+ button for my VSX-49TX to repeat I had to blow the device away and import/modify the closest thing in the database.

A friend has a denon 4802, the codes for that device did absolutely nothing.

While this remote is awesome and I am very very happy with it I belive that it's code learning ability is weak compared to any other units I've used and while the discrete code portion of the preprogramed database is a good feature the database seems to have recieved little testing.

But hey, minor nits.

I had problems learning the repeat "Volume" of a Marantz receiver to the MX-700. It took a number of tries, but it finally worked.

To learn a repeating IR command (sustained burst like a volume up) you need to press and hold the original button on the remote control.

The "wacky rituals" written up in the manual are based on long experience teaching IR commands to all brands of learning remotes. You'll find all these techniques quoted in remote central FAQ's and in manufacturer training and instruction manuals from many brands. They are a fall back process IF/WHEN you have trouble.

I agree that they sound wacky. However, sometimes they are life savers, and they are not specific to any brand or model of learning system. You could be using an AMX Iris, a phillips Pronto, an IRIQ, and with one learning remote/original combination have no problem with another combination you might have to use a "wacky technique".

In my PERSONAL experience with the MX-700, I have found it to be an exceptional learning system. I am especially appreciative of the "Batch Learning" capability. You can learn an entire remote control in less than three minutes.
Best Regards,
Eric

Agreed. Every remote has it's own quirks in learning with certain commands or equipment. I had no problem learning the same command to my MX-500. Go figure!

One thing I'd like to see (not being a laptop user) is the ability to learn right on the remote so you could intantly test the results. It's a minor point though because once you get this puppy programmed (and the batch learning is fast as Eric says), it's awesome!

I have had several repeating codes not repeat when first learned, but re-learning them a second time making sure I kept the source remote's button held down a bit longer past the "Good" signal, AND making sure I waited for the "Ready" display to show before starting (especially important when using the automatic advance feature), yielded good repeating codes second time around.

If you want to see wacky, you should see what we had to go through to get the Sony TA-E9000ES codes into the Pronto from that %^#$&^ two-way remote ... as that guy from "Not Another Teen Movie" would say, Man, that is wacked! :-)
