What's a good place/person to send them to?
I have two issues now that I have the unit here:
1- I want two pages on "main" one visible, one hidden for devices I don't want a UI for but whose functions I want to use in macros or on other device pages. Hidden pages on the MAIN page are visible.
2- The built in codes for the JVC S9500 SVHS deck are the "b-codes" and will not work with the defualt IR code set for the unit. You need to unplug the VCR, plug it back in and power it up with the new code as per the manual.

A good place is right where you sent them - here. Then, if you don't get an answer, you can send them to [email protected]. But, I'd ask here first. 1) To hide devices on the MAIN page, just hide all of the pages of that device, and then delete the name of the device and save that button. Poof! Gone! Even if someone presses the button, it won't go into that device, since all of the pages are hidden. 2) Can you not learn the codes from your remote? If not, find a CCF file in the Pronto area that has the codes you want, send it to me, and I'll convert it to an MXD file. Note: I bought a JVC 7800 S-VHS deck because of great reports on AVS and HTF. Everything works fine, except pre-recorded VHS tapes and VHS tapes recorded on other machines are very, very "soft". No sharpness to them. Yet the tapes play perfectly on my 2-year old standard Sony VHS tape deck. Any idea why such a supposedly great deck like the 7800 would have soft images when playing back VHS tapes not recorded on the deck itself? ... Greg :-)

I have no idea why the JVC deck would behave like that. On my 9800 I disable the "digital R3" and enable the TBC/NR. But I rarely play pre-recorded or borrowed stuff in it.

To GregoriusM: I've used JVC SVCRs for years and this is what I've found:
They work best with tapes recorded at normal (2 HR) speed. They seem to wear out tapes faster than other machines. (This only applies to tapes that are rerecorded +10 times.) Use the SVHS-ET setting with standard tapes and save money unless it's a one-of-a-kind recording (not just time shifting). Use the S-video inputs and outputs (even if you use a S-video to Composite converter (or comp to S-vid).

Thanks all.
I'm not THAT worried about pre-record or borrow, but I AM worried about it not playing tapes from my other deck, a Sony.
I want the decks for time-shifting (plus the S-VHS for recording TV shows that I want to keep - concerts, mini-series, etc.), and if one is recording, I want to be able to view a tape on the other. If the JVC can't display the Sony's tapes properly, it's a bummer! :-/

Nope. Haven't tried Edit. Thanks. I'll give that a try, because I'm not that happy with the Panasonic. It has a good picture on other tapes, but is just not as good a machine in any other respect.
Thanks, JC!
... Greg :-)
Edit: Do you mean even on playback, or just when recording?

I'm talking about playing tapes. I think the default setting for Picture Control is AUTO, but there's a BIG improvement in picture quality when you set it to EDIT. Try it out and let me know if it helps!

The absolute best VCR I've found for playing back standard VHS SP & EP is the Sony SLV-M91HF. I'm amazed at how good its VHS EP recording are (and yes, I know they should technically be horrible!)... no grain, but but lots of detail. I've use other so-called good 19 micron VHS machines before... nothing like this. It even makes old EP tapes recorded on other VCRs look a whole lot better than they do on the original machine!
With that said, I'll be adding a JVC SVHS VCR (probably 7800/7900 range) shortly, though if they wear out tapes quicker I may not use it for a lot of timeshifting (my T-160 tapes go through the VCR a couple hundred times before I toss 'em).

Hmm, anybody want to buy a Sony SLV-R1000 SVHS? I haven't used it in almost two years, except a couple of times I wanted to check how bad the StarWars widescreen tapes looked - I lasted one minute each time ...
Actually the thing is so well built I may just keep it for nostalgia value, as I probably won't be getting much for it anyway :-).

RE JVC S-VHS:
I didn't intend to scare anyone off of JVC VCRs, By "wear out tapes" I was refering to the fact that after a dozen plus rerecordings the "VIDEO CALIBRATION" message starts to pop up frequently. It's an annoyance but the tape is still usable.
BTW, I used one tape to time shift every episode of Babylon5's 5 year run (3 months real time) on the SciFi channel so I could watch them when I got home from work (the SciFi channel was showing them in widescreen), and towards the last the effects of wear were notciable, but not unbearable.

10 Fuji tapes go for $16.99 Canadian, so I'm not worried about wearing out tapes. At least the ones that are good enough for time-shifting.
