I am considering an MX-500 but was wandering if it is compatable with a ecostar dish 501 reciever since the signal is uhf; can anyone tell me if they have done this

If I'm not mistaken, the 501 also has IR capability. If so, you can use the MX-500 with it by using it in IR mode.

I have the (Canadian) Bell Expressvu 5100, which is the same model as the Dish 501, and it works just fine with IR remote controls like the MX-500. The supplied remote *always* emits both IR and UHF and the receiver is constantly watching for both. When you learn from the supplied remote to the MX-500, it will learn without trouble.
Note that there is no need to worry about being in IR mode.
