Yes! I just upgraded my surround speakers recently and the difference is not subtle. Then again, my old surround speakers were pretty inexpensive and weren't the same brand as my mains.
(Greg, I'm sure you're wondering... Yes, I did find some used Active ADPs at Audiogon and blew my tax refund on them!)

Okay, okay, I'll drop this one :) As I said, I personally only use high quality speakers for every application (I use the same speakers as my front left and right as recommended for DTS) The person asking the original question was contemplating a system that uses TWO speakers for the entire system... I was trying to provide alternatives that use 5 (and wireless speakers). Can we all agree that a 5 speaker setup with cheap wireless rear speakers would likely be better than a 2-speaker home theater setup with 'simluated surround' ? Please? :-) Randy www.BlueDo.com

Rear speakers, as in the rear surround speakers in Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. They don't do that much! Maybe a little echo of a crash during an explosion, or some background music... When I installed home theater, the single biggest complaint was that the rear speakers weren't working because they didn't hear things out of them! It's hard to explain how little they do! Like i said, when done right there will be no complaints. I would rather have a high end pair of speakers with a good amplifier than a cheap surround setup with wireless speakers. The imaging that a very nice pair of speakers and a very good amplifier will give would be much better than a cheap mismatched 5 speaker system, especially cheap wireless speakers. With a system of good quality and calibrated right, even a non action movie, the sound will have you at the edge of your seat and you won't even realize it. A good sound system will draw you in so you lose yourself in the movie. Your ears aren't supposed to focus on the surround speakers. With a good system you don't even realize your hearing the surround speakers, but would definately know when they are turned off.

Well, if you're ever in the DC area, let me know and you can come over and have a listen. I love 'em.
Power center? You mean like one of those Monster Power components? I have a couple of Monster power strips, but I've been wondering if some kind of balanced power unit would make any difference. I think the system sounds great as it is, though...

Ohh...! It's amazing how two little letters at the end of a word can completely change the meaning of a question, eh?
OK, well now you're really going to hate me because I already have an active center! I thought you knew? I got it late last year in response to the news that they were discontinuing the Active line. I wasn't able to track down an Active CC, so I got a discounted, older model 450C instead. It seems that the differences between the two are mostly cosmetic.
Man, is this OT or what?

Not long ago I owned the Polk Audio system (I believe called the SRT-5000), which included a huge powered center channel almost identical to this one: (Size: 8-5/8" H x 34" W x 14" D)I miss it... I've since moved on to a 'hidden' system for the wife's benefit :) Randy www.BlueDo.com

Randy--
I didn't know Polk did powered speakers. Are they still making them?

Sure - the pic I used is from the new model. It had 2-piece fronts, the bottom was like 2 or 3 10" powered subs and the top piece was the woofers and tweeters, and the surrounds were great bipole/dipole beauties. Mine were in a beautiful dark cherry veneer... I'm getting a little weepy thinking about them :) Randy www.BlueDo.com

I just noticed the dimensions of that speaker! Man, that's a monster!
So, they have built in powered subwoofers? The other drivers aren't powered, right?

No, just the subwoofers are powered.
