No clock.

Text color is the same as the MX-500.

Edit: Here's the hint. Text color is the same when the backlighting is on as when it is off.

TEXT color is the same you say....that still leaves backlighting open to all sorts of psychedelic colors :-)

So I understand that by pressing the middle of the thumb wheel, you get the equivalent of a select or enter. I know I looked at the 500, and this function seemed tedious at best to actually press without 'rocking' (your 'wobble') into a direction. This is a problem (IMHO), particularly to those of us with big thumbs. Wanna' rassle? (thumb upright and twitching!)

Are you suggesting that this is working well (or better) on the 700, or pretty much the same? If the latter, do they intend to make it better? This is why I love the Sony 'Joystick'...up...right...down...right...JAB...works every time. Say...does the 1000 do this well? All software issues aside....

It sounds like you looked at the short-lived GS1 with the problematic thumbpad. The problem you describe was resolved with an updated thumbpad design.

What was said above, only in white on white writing. (Press CTRL-A and you'll see it above!)

The LCD screen does not reverse like the MX-500 when backlit. It has black text on a mid-green background.

I'd like to see the background lighter though, but that's a personal opinion.

... Greg :-)
